Éric Hélary (born 10 August 1996 in Paris, Île-de-France, France) is a French racing driver, who competed in the 2000 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for Opel Team Holzer.[1] Driving for the secondary works Team Holzer entry, Hélary would become a regular point scorer, although he would move away from the DTM at the end of the campaign.[1]

Hélary would also make a one-off appearance in the 2002 Championship for OPC Euroteam, although he would fail to score.[2] Away from the DTM, Hélary would claim overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1993, a class victory in 1995, and the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in 1997.[3]

Background[]

Originally starting in karting in his native France, Hélary entered his first car racing series in 1987 entering the Formula Ford 1600 France, finishing fourth.[3] A year later Hélary would charge to the Formula Ford France title with eight wins in eleven races, before moving into the Formula 3 France Championship in 1989.[3] Finishing fourth in that season, Hélary would remain in French F3 for 1990, and duly secured the Championship crown.[3]

Sporting Endeavours: 1991 - 1999[]

The Formula 3000 International Championship would occupy Hélary's agenda for 1991, although he would not challenge for the crown.[3] In 1992 the Frenchman would drive to the Peugeot 905 Spider Cup title, while also making his World Sportscar Championship debut as a factory Peugeot driver.[3] Another Spider Cup title would follow in 1993, with Hélary also charging to victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside Christophe Bouchut and Geoff Brabham.[3]

French Supertouring was Hélary's main entertainment for 1994, with the Frenchman claiming fifth in the Championship.[3] A second season saw Hélary narrowly miss-out on the title, claiming seven victories, while also competing in the FIA Touring Car World Cup and the Global GT Championship, albeit without notable success in either.[3] However, Hélary would win his class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing second overall.[3]

For 1996 Hélary would focus on the Global GT Championship, although he would finish outside of the top 50 after five race appearances.[3] In 1997 Hélary would bounce between series, although he would notably win the 24 Hours of Spa Francorchamps, as well as claim second in class at Le Mans.[3] 1998 saw Hélary move into the German Supertouring Championship, finishing fourth as a factory Opel driver, before slipping to eighth in 1999.[3]

DTM History[]

Post-DTM Career[]

Hélary returned to racing in his native France after losing his permanent DTM race seat, returning to the French Supertouring Championship in 2001, finishing second in 2005.[3] He subsequently moved into GT racing in 2007, competing in the American Le Mans Series, before racing in GT3s in his native France in 2008.[3] After that, Hélary would compete in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series between 2010 and 2013, claiming the Championship in 2011.[3]

After that, Hélary would bounce between series for the rest of the 2010s, before moving into heritage racing in 2019.[3]
