The 2000 Hockenheim Opening Race 1, officially known as the Rennsport-Festival 2000 Race 1, was the opening round of the 2000 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 28 May 2000.[1] The race, which was the first race of the reborn DTM to be staged, would see Bernd Schneider secure victory for D2 AMG-Mercedes.[2]
After three years of discussions and negotiations between four of Germany's major automotive manufacturers, the DTM returned in 2000, with a new rulebook forged with cost controls in mind.[3] Opel, who had campaigned cost-controls since 1996, signed up to the new platform immediately, with Mercedes also agreeing to join the series.[3] ABT Sportsline later received special dispensation to join the series, using heavily modified Audi TTs developed semi-independently from Audi.[3]
A variety of drivers would sign-up for the new DTM, including 1996 ITC Champion Manuel Reuter, as well as the last Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft Champion Bernd Schneider.[3] 1999 Super Tourenwagen Cup Champion Christian Abt would headline the Abt-Audi challenge alongside Laurent Aïello, while ex-Formula One drivers Pedro Lamy and Stefano Modena would also race in the series.[3]
Qualifying for the first DTM race of the millennium would see Schneider secure pole position, beating Reuter, while youngster Timo Scheider claimed a surprise third.[4] Next up was Marcel Fässler ahead of Uwe Alzen, while Abt was the best of the hastily prepared Abt-Audis in seventeenth.[4]
