The 2000 Nürburgring I Race 1, otherwise known as the Großer Preis der Tourenwagen 2000 Heat 1, was the ninth race of the 2000 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Nürburgring in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on 20 August 2000.[1] The race would see Bernd Schneider secure his third Grand Slam of the campaign, with tricky conditions throughout the race.[2]
Background[]
Bernd Schneider left the fourth round of the DTM season with the Championship lead, and had established a fair advantage of 27 points. Manuel Reuter remained his closest challenger in second, while Klaus Ludwig had moved into third after his second win in two races, leaving the Sachsenring on 74 points. Joachim Winkelhock was next up in fourth ahead of Marcel Fässler, with sixteen of the nineteen full-season drivers having scored.
In the Teams' Championship it was Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes who had scrambled to the head of the pack in Hohenstein, moving onto 134 points. They were hence two ahead of sister squad D2 AMG-Mercedes, while Opel Team Phoenix were ten points further back in third. Original Teile AMG-Mercedes had also moved forward in fourth, overhauling Opel Team Holzer I, with every team bar Abt Sportsline having scored.
