The 2001 Hockenheim Finale Feature Race, otherwise known as the DMV-Preis Hockenheim 2001 Feature Race, was the twentieth and final race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on 7 October 2001.[1] The race would see Bernd Mayländer sweep to his first and only DTM victory for Eschmann AMG-Mercedes, in what was the final race to be held on the full Hockenheimring Grand Prix circuit.[2]
Mayländer had started the final race of the season from second after teammate Patrick Huisman beat him to victory in the Qualifying Race.[3] The German racer would subsequently fail to challenge the Dutchman at the start, as behind the #18 Abt-Audi of Christian Abt was elbowed onto the grass.[3]
There was more drama at the back of the field, as Martin Tomczyk spun Peter Mamerow into the gravel at turn one having smacked into the back of the #20 Opel.[3] Out front, meanwhile, Huisman attempted to escape from Mayländer with Dumbreck stalking them ahead of Timo Scheider, with no other incidents of note.[3]
The early laps were dominated by the progress of Bernd Schneider, who stormed his way up from nineteenth to the top ten with a series of strong moves.[3] Elsewhere, David Saelens went for an excursion entering the stadium and spun to the back, while Scheider fell off the back of the leaders and hence had to fend off the attentions of Mattias Ekström.[3]
Huisman held the lead until making his compulsory stop on lap six, although an issue with broken screws meant he lost a lot of time, slipping to twelfth.[3] That handed the lead to Mayländer who stopped on the following tour, and would rejoin comfortably ahead of his teammate in eighth behind Schneider.[3]
Elsewhere, Alain Menu was spun into the barriers by a clumsy Abt, while Uwe Alzen got into an aggressive fight with Ekström, Schneider and Michael Bartels.[3] That ended with Alzen elbowing Ekström off track at turn twelve, dumping the Swede to the back, just as Scheider was forced to retire with suspension damage.[3]
The rest of the stops would put Mayländer back to the head of the pack, with Dumbreck in second ahead of Schneider, who benefited from a swift stop and incidents ahead.[3] One of those would involve a recovering Huisman, who was knocked off the circuit by Alzen late on while fighting, after Manuel Reuter had barged his way past both of the Mercedes racers.[3]
With that the race, and the season, was over, with Mayländer cruising to victory three seconds clear of Dumbreck in second.[3] Schneider rounded out his title winning campaign with third place, just ahead of a feisty Reuter, while Marcel Fässler beat Ekström to fifth.[3] A battered Alzen scrambled back onto the circuit to claim seventh ahead of Darren Turner and Christijan Albers, while Thomas Jäger was the final scorer in tenth.[3]
Background[]
Patrick Huisman had been the main beneficiary from the penultimate race of the season, having added three points to his tally to enhance his slim hopes of claiming third in the Championship. Indeed, with Schneider already declared as Champion and Uwe Alzen confirmed in second, the Finale would see the fight for third take precedent. Laurent Aïello would head into the final race of the season with the initiative in the fight, although heavy damage to his car in the Qualifikationslauf meant he would not take part.
In the Teams' Championship D2 AMG-Mercedes had already secured the title, while Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes had claimed second. That meant that the finale would be about the fight for third as in the Drivers' Championship, with Abt Sportsline holding a seven point advantage over Manthey Racing. The latter would, however, have the benefit of starting the finale with a front row lockout, while Abt had just one car ready for the final race.
