The 2001 Hockenheim Finale Qualifying Race, otherwise formally known as the DMV-Preis Hockenheim 2001 Qualifikationslauf, was the nineteenth and penultimate round of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on 9 October 2001.[1] The race would see Patrick Huisman secure his maiden and only DTM victory, as he and Eschmann AMG-Mercedes teammate Bernd Mayländer claimed a one-two.[2]
Qualifying for the Qualifkationslauf would see Michael Bartels claim the first pole position for Opel of the season, using the slipstream effect to record a 2:06.057.[3] Next up were Huisman and Mayländer as the lead two Mercedes in the field, while Mattias Ekström claimed fourth to lead the Abt-Audi charge.[3]
The circuit was damp but drying as the field lined up to take the rolling start, with Huisman reacting fastest to claim the lead ahead of Bartels.[2] Mayländer tried to challenge for second but had to settle in ahead of Ekström, as behind Marcel Fässler tried to lunge inside of Martin Tomczyk, leaving both spinning across the circuit with Fässler hitting the pitwall.[2]
Moments later and Joachim Winkelhock was out for the rest of the afternoon, as contact with David Saelens saw the #3 Opel slam into the barriers a few hundred feet after the first corner.[2] Further around and Champion Bernd Schneider was out of the race, having slid wide at the final corner and slid into the barriers.[2]
With several cars stranded across the circuit the Safety Car was scrambled, although not before Laurent Aïello went out in spectacular fashion.[2] Indeed, the Frenchman had slid wide entering the Stadium section and clipped the grass, with the subsequent spin putting him into the gravel.[2] Momentum then tipped the #19 car into a barrel roll, with the car coming to rest on its side completely wrecked.[2]
The restart, which came on the final lap saw Huisman ace his getaway to re-secure the lead, while teammate Mayländer elbowed his way past Bartels for second into turn one.[2] That move also allowed Dumbreck to slip ahead of the #11 Opel, with Ekström just falling shy of taking the Opel on the run to the first chicane.[2]
With that the race was over, with Huisman sweeping to victory ahead of Mayländer, while Dumbreck completed the podium.[2] Bartels managed to keep Ekström at bay to secure fourth, as behind another late incident saw Yves Olivier bounce across the gravel entering the Stadium after hip check from Christijan Albers.[2]
Background[]
Bernd Schneider had enhanced his title winning advantage as the penultimate race weekend came to a conclusion, moving onto 149 points for the season. Uwe Alzen, meanwhile, almost secured second place, needing just two points in Hockenheim to secure the runner-up spot. Furthermore, Laurent Aïello was the only man who could deny him at the finale, although the Frenchman was only three ahead of Peter Dumbreck in fourth.
The Teams' Championship was also over with a round to spare, with D2 AMG-Mercedes having claimed an unbeatable tally of 221 points over the nine completed rounds. Sister squad Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes would hence have to settle for second, arriving at the finale with 165 points to their credit, meaning it was the fight for third that would take precedence in Hockenheim. Abt Sportsline headed that fight on 104, meaning they had a twelve point advantage over Eschmann AMG-Mercedes in fourth.

- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
Milestones[]
- Maiden (and only) pole position for Michael Bartels.
- Patrick Huisman secured his first and only victory.
- Manthey Racing scored their maiden DTM victory as an entrant.
- 22nd win for Mercedes as a manufacturer.
- This was also the first win for a Mercedes team other than HWA Team.
- Maiden podium finish for Bernd Mayländer.
Standings[]
Patrick Huisman had been the main beneficiary from the penultimate race of the season, having added three points to his tally to enhance his slim hopes of claiming third in the Championship. Indeed, with Schneider already declared as Champion and Uwe Alzen confirmed in second, the Finale would see the fight for third take precedent. Laurent Aïello would head into the final race of the season with the initiative in the fight, although heavy damage to his car in the Qualifikationslauf meant he would not take part.
In the Teams' Championship D2 AMG-Mercedes had already secured the title, while Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes had claimed second. That meant that the finale would be about the fight for third as in the Drivers' Championship, with Abt Sportsline holding a seven point advantage over Manthey Racing. The latter would, however, have the benefit of starting the finale with a front row lockout, while Abt had just one car ready for the final race.
