The 2001 Hockenheim Opening Feature Race, otherwise known as the Rennsport-Festival 2001 Feature Race, was the second race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on 22 April 2001.[1] The race would see Bernd Schneider secure his second victory after winning the Qualifikationslauf, fending off a late challenge from Marcel Fässler.[2]
The grid was based on the results of the Qualifikationslauf, meaning Schneider started from pole position ahead of new teammate Peter Dumbreck.[3] Indeed, the top seven on the grid would all pilot AMG-Mercedes during the race, with Laurent Aïello the best non-Mercedes in eighth for Abt-Audi.[3] Alain Menu, meanwhile, would lead the Opel challenge from eleventh.[3]
The start of the race saw Schneider leap into an early lead, while Turner led Uwe Alzen and Thomas Jäger into the first corner.[2] Aïello, meanwhile, would get the jump on Fässler to claim seventh, despite having his rear-bumper prised off at the first corner, while Christian Abt took ninth from Bernd Mayländer at the end of the opening tour.[2]
Elsewhere, Patrick Huisman was elbowed into the gravel at turn one but rejoined, while Michael Bartels received a whack on the brakes for turn two but continued.[4] Yet, all was not well with Bartels' car and so he retired at the end of lap four, joining Alain Menu, who had stopped at the end of the opening tour, Mattias Ekström and Joachim Winkelhock who had both been unable to start.[4]
Out front, meanwhile, Schneider was making his escape, while Turner established himself in second just ahead of the ever aggressive Alzen.[4] Behind, Aïello was harassing Pedro Lamy and Darren Turner, albeit after Fässler had muscled his way past all three.[4]
Fässler's charge would carry him past Jäger, before briefly filtering into the lead by running a long first stint.[4] Elsewhere, Martin Tomczyk spun while fighting with Mayländer, before flying off the circuit at turn five and into the barriers after making his stop, triggering a Safety Car.[4]
The Safety car intervention worked wonders for Fässler, for he would make his stop before being caught by the SC and hence was able to gain a lot of time.[4] He duly rejoined in second with fresher tyres than those around him, as Tomczyk climbed out of his ruined car without issue.[4]
The restart saw Schneider make an early break, for Fässler would first have to pass a lapped Opel of Yves Olivier.[4] Once clear the Swiss racer steadily close the gap on Schneider, although time was fast running out.[4]
Indeed, Fässler would run out of time to beat his stablemate, and hence had to settle for second as Schneider ran on to secure his first Feature victory of the season.[2] Behind, Dumbreck kept Alzen at bay to secure third, while Jäger and Lamy scrapped for fifth to the chequered flag.[2] Aïello was next up for Abt-Audi after a late move on Turner, while Mayländer and Abt secured the remaining points.
Background[]
Bernd Schneider had ended the Qualifikationslauf with the Championship lead, having scored three points courtesy of his win. Peter Dumbreck was second with two, while Thomas Jäger held third with a solitary point. The Teams' Championship was equally simple, with D2 AMG-Mercedes leading with fifth, while Original Teile AMG-Mercedes had a single point in second.
