2000 Hockenheim Finale Race 2 | 2001 Hockenheim Opening Feature Race |
The 2001 Hockenheim Opening Qualifying Race, otherwise know formally as the Rennsport-Festival 2001 Qualifikationslauf, was the opening race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on 22 April 2001.[1] The race would see Bernd Schneider open his title defence with victory, as AMG-Mercedes dominated the race to set the grid for the Feature Race.[2]
The winter had seen several changes on the driver front since the inaugural 2000 campaign, as legendary touring car racer Klaus Ludwig retired.[3] That prompted some shuffling amongst Mercedes' teams, with Peter Dumbreck moving to partner Schneider, Uwe Alzen hired to replace Ludwig, while Manthey Racing purchased two 2001-spec cars to field Bernd Mayländer and Patrick Huisman, leaving ten Mercedes on the grid.[4]
Opel, meanwhile, had likewise had a shuffle after Alzen was sacked and joined Mercedes, moving Timo Scheider into the main factory team to partner Joachim Winkelhock.[3] Manuel Reuter, meanwhile, would be partnered by Yves Olivier, privateers Euroteam hired reigning British Touring Car Championship Champion Alain Menu and Hubert Haupt, while also dropping protege Steffen Schulz.[5]
Elsewhere, Audi had stepped up their investment in their pseudo-factory effort with Team Abt Sportsline, although they caused a stir by hiring two complete rookies to their second team.[6] Indeed, while Laurent Aïello and Christian Abt had been retained to spearhead their operation, Abt had hired relatively unknown novices Martin Tomczyk and Mattias Ekström to form a "Junior" team.[6]
Qualifying for the Qualifikationslauf had left Schneider at the head of the field, joined on the front row by new teammate Dumbreck.[7] Indeed, it proved to be a session dominated by the Mercedes contingent, with the Stuttgart cars sweeping the top five, leaving Reuter in sixth as the best Opel, and Aïello in seventh as the best Abt-Audi.[7]
