The 2001 Lausitz 200 Feature Race, otherwise known as the 2001 Lausitzring Feature Race, was the twelfth race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany on 12 August 2001.[1] The race would see Peter Dumbreck secure victory for the second time in 2001, although teammate Bernd Schneider finished second to extend his Championship lead.[2]
Uwe Alzen would start the race from pole position after securing victory in the Qualifikationslauf, and duly aced his start to secure the lead into turn one.[2][3] Behind, Dumbreck would get away well and joust with teammate Schneider on the brakes for third, before lunging past both Schneider and Marcel Fässler with a sweeping line through the first corner.[2]
The opening tour proved far cleaner than it had in the Qualifikationslauf, with Alzen leading from Dumbreck, Fässler and Schneider, with no major incidents behind.[2] Indeed, the top four would break clear over the course of the opening tour, before Schneider, having slipped to fourth, gambled on making an early stop at the end of lap two.[2]
Dumbreck followed his teammate in a lap later, and duly emerged ahead of the #1 Mercedes as they ran at the back of the field.[2] They would, however, quickly begin lapping faster than those ahead as others began stopping, before the race was brought under the Safety Car's control on lap five.[2]
Indeed, Alain Menu had sustained damage after early contact, with parts of his front bumper and bonnet lifting at high speed.[3] On lap four the pressure of running at full throttle along the start/finish straight caused the bodywork to fail completely, scattering debris across the circuit.[3]
The race resumed on lap nine with the majority of those that had not stopped, including race leader Alzen, heading to the pitlane during the intervention.[3] Yet, Alzen had been caught behind the Safety Car before his stop and so had been forced to run at a reduced pace, allowing Dumbreck and Schneider to hit the front of the field.[3] The Brit duly aced the restart to secure the lead ahead of Schneider, while Fässler ran on in third with Alzen at the back after his delayed stop.[3]
A ferocious duel for the lead unfolded during the early laps after the restart, with Schneider throwing everything he had at Dumbreck.[3] Yet, the Brit would hold on and after several lock-ups the #1 D2 AMG-Mercedes backed off, allowing Dumbreck to secure the lead.[3]
With that the race for victory was over, meaning most of the action in the second half of the race was found in the midfield.[3] Alzen was one of those to entertain with a series of moves to climb back into the top ten, only to be removed from contention by Christian Abt, while Fässler was relegated to tenth after serving a stop-go for overtaking under yellow flags.[2]
With that the race was run, with Dumbreck easing across the line to secure victory, while Schneider enhanced his title lead with second.[2] Behind them was rookie Mattias Ekström after a storming run from nineteenth, with Thomas Jäger, Patrick Huisman and Martin Tomczyk trailing in his wake.[2] Manuel Reuter was the best of the Opel pilots in seventh ahead of a recovering Fässler, with Darren Turner and David Saelens completing the scorers.[2]
Background[]
Bernd Schneider's lead had been chipped away slightly by the opening race at the Lausitzring, with Marcel Fässler having gained a single point on the German. Schneider's lead was still a very healthy 42 points over the Swiss racer, while race winner Uwe Alzen had climbed to third on 47. He had therefore overhauled Peter Dumbreck, with no other changes to the order given the lack of points on offer.
In the Teams' Championship it was still D2 AMG-Mercedes who headed the charge, although their advantage had been reduced by four. Indeed, sister squad Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes had closed the gap to 40 points after their qualifikationslauf one-two, while Eschmann AMG-Mercedes had retained third on 50 points. There were no other changes to the order behind the top three after the first battle of the Lausitzring.

- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
Milestones[]
- Peter Dumbreck scored his second career victory.
- Eighteenth victory for HWA Team as an entrant.
- Mercedes registered their eighteenth win as a manufacturer.
- David Saelens claimed his maiden points finish.
Standings[]
Bernd Schneider had extended his effective Championship lead with second place in the second battle of Lausitz, moving onto 108 points for the campaign. Teammate Peter Dumbreck had, however, moved into second with his victory in Lausitz, but was 43 points off the lead at the end of the afternoon. Marcel Fässler was next up having lost second, eleven behind Dubmbreck, while Uwe Alzen had slipped to fourth on 47.
In the Teams' Championship the fight for the title had effectively become a duel between the two HWA Mercedes teams with four rounds to go, for third placed Eschmann AMG-Mercedes had slipped 115 points behind. Of the two HWA teams it was D2 AMG-Mercedes who held the advantage on 173 points, while sister squad Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes had slipped 72 behind in second. That meant that D2 could win the title at the A1-Ring in early September, if they had a strong weekend at the Nürburgring.
