The 2001 Lausitzring Feature Race, otherwise known as the 2001 Lausitz 200 Qualifikationslauf, was the eleventh race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany on 12 August 2001.[1] The race would see Uwe Alzen secure victory from pole position, defeating teammate Marcel Fässler after a race long duel.[2]
Qualifying for the Sprint race had seen Alzen secure pole position, defeating Fässler by a significant margin of 0.716s.[3] Behind, Alain Menu survived a rain impacted session to secure third for Opel ahead of Championship leader Bernd Schneider, while Mattias Ekström headed the Abt-Audi charge from ninth.[3]
The start of the race saw the two black Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes blast into the lead, although Menu tried his best to challenge the #6 car of Fässler.[2] That attack did not end well for Menu, who was spent spinning off the circuit, stopping at the pit exit and rejoining at the back of the field.[2]
There was more drama further around the opening tour, as Manuel Reuter tried to lunge past two Mercedes at turn five, resulting in Patrick Huisman getting half spun.[2] Michael Bartels, meanwhile, would go for a spin at the exact same corner after contact, while Martin Tomczyk received terminal damage after getting run off track exiting turn seven.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, the chaos behind had allowed the top three to break clear, with Alzen leading Fässler, while Schneider gave chase in third.[2] Behind, Dumbreck had dropped back to keep the Audi of Ekström at bay, while the sister cars of Christian Abt and Laurent Aïello harassed Thomas Jäger for sixth.[2] Elsewhere, Joachim Winkelhock would have another troubled racer, spinning twice while fighting in the midfield.[2]
Unfortunately for Ekström his race would come to an end prematurely after a swipe against the wall exiting turn five, causing his suspension to fail.[2] Behind, Abt managed to barge past Jäger for fifth, before Aïello knocked the German racer off track entirely with a lunge at turn one for sixth.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, it was formation flying for the two sets of HWA Mercedes to the chequered flag, with Alzen flashing across the line to claim victory ahead of Fässler.[2] Schneider secured third without having to push the sister cars around him, while Dumbreck refused to attack his teammate and settled for fourth.[2]
Background[]
Bernd Schneider had once again extended his Championship lead as the first half of the campaign came to a close, having claimed 92 points across ten races. Marcel Fässler was next up in second at the halfway point on 49 points, while Peter Dumbreck was a further four behind in third. Uwe Alzen was a point further behind in fourth, while Laurent Aïello completed the half-time top five on 37 points.
In the Teams' Championship it was reigning Champions D2 AMG-Mercedes who held the initiative at the halfway mark, having claimed 137 points during the first half of the season. Sister squad Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes faced a 44 point deficit in second, while Eschmann AMG-Mercedes had moved into third on 50 points. Abt Sportsline were next up as the first non-Mercedes team in the Championship, while Opel's challenge was led by OPC Team Holzer I in seventh.

- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
Milestones[]
- Fifth career victory for Uwe Alzen.
- Seventeenth victory for HWA Team as an entrant.
- Mercedes registered their seventeenth win as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
Bernd Schneider's lead had been chipped away slightly by the opening race at the Lausitzring, with Marcel Fässler having gained a single point on the German. Schneider's lead was still a very healthy 42 points over the Swiss racer, while race winner Uwe Alzen had climbed to third on 47. He had therefore overhauled Peter Dumbreck, with no other changes to the order given the lack of points on offer.
In the Teams' Championship it was still D2 AMG-Mercedes who headed the charge, although their advantage had been reduced by four. Indeed, sister squad Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes had closed the gap to 40 points after their qualifikationslauf one-two, while Eschmann AMG-Mercedes had retained third on 50 points. There were no other changes to the order behind the top three after the first battle of the Lausitzring.
