The 2001 Nürburgring II Qualifying Race, otherwise known as the Großer Preis der Tourenwagen 2001 Qualifikationslauf, was the thirteenth round of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Nürburgring in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany on 26 August 2001.[1] The race would see Laurent Aïello secure a dominant victory and Grand Slam for Abt-Audi, having led every lap from pole position.[2]
Indeed, Abt-Audi had been the squad to beat at the Nürburgring, for having won both races on the GP Strecke earlier in the season, Aïello would beat teammate Christian Abt to pole for the Qualifikationslauf around the Sprint circuit in qualifying.[3] Furthermore, the Abt Junior cars of Mattias Ekström and Martin Tomczyk would find themselves in fifth and seventh, with Championship leader Bernd Schneider leading the anti-Audi resistance from third for Mercedes.[3]
Aïello made good on his pole position to leap into the lead at the start, while Abt moved across to block Schneider.[2] Indeed, the #18 Abt-Audi was so preoccupied with preventing the #1 Mercedes from moving through that he failed to not Uwe Alzen on the outside of the circuit, who duly swept past both Abt and Schneider to secure second.[2]
Further around the opening lap Alain Menu made a mistake and ran across a kerb, before collecting Thomas Jäger and pushing the #14 Mercedes into a spin.[2] That may have also played a part in the demise of Peter Dumbreck a few laps later, who suffered a failure exiting the chicane, with white smoke pouring from the back of his car.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, there was no stopping Aïello, who set a series of quick laps early on to secure an impressive lead.[2] Alzen, meanwhile, would get a solid grip on second, with Abt having to defend from Schneider instead of harassing the #5 Mercedes for second.[2]
Indeed, other than the first lap dramas there would be no major incidents during the Sprint, with Aïello claiming a comfortable victory by almost five seconds from Alzen.[2] Abt was next up ahead of Schneider, while Bernd Mayländer claimed an impressive fifth ahead of Ekström.[2]
Background[]
Bernd Schneider had extended his effective Championship lead with second place in the second battle of Lausitz, moving onto 108 points for the campaign. Teammate Peter Dumbreck had, however, moved into second with his victory in Lausitz, but was 43 points off the lead at the end of the afternoon. Marcel Fässler was next up having lost second, eleven behind Dubmbreck, while Uwe Alzen had slipped to fourth on 47.
In the Teams' Championship the fight for the title had effectively become a duel between the two HWA Mercedes teams with four rounds to go, for third placed Eschmann AMG-Mercedes had slipped 115 points behind. Of the two HWA teams it was D2 AMG-Mercedes who held the advantage on 173 points, while sister squad Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes had slipped 72 behind in second. That meant that D2 could win the title at the A1-Ring in early September, if they had a strong weekend at the Nürburgring.

Milestones[]
- Laurent Aïello secured his third DTM victory.
- Maiden Grand Slam for Aïello.
- Third win for ABT Sportsline as an entrant.
- Third victory for Audi as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
Bernd Schneider had failed to extend his Championship lead after the opening bout at the Nürburgring, and hence had remained on 108 points for the season. Teammate Peter Dumbreck was next up in second, but was still 43 behind, while Marcel Fässler and Uwe Alzen had retained third and fourth. Laurent Aïello had been the main benefactor after his victory, having inched closer to Alzen, while Christian Abt had moved ahead Joachim Winkelhock to claim thirteenth.
In the Teams' Championship there had been very little change out front, as D2 AMG-Mercedes had seen their lead marginally reduced. Indeed, their advantage had been deducted by two points to 70 by sister squad Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes, while behind, a further 47 points away, Eschmann AMG-Mercedes had retained third, just ahead of Abt Sportsline Junior in fourth. The senior Abt-Audi squad had instead been the Qualifikationlauf's major winners, having moved to within two of their rookie counterparts.
