The 2001 Nürburgring I Feature Race, otherwise known as the Eifelrennen 2001 Feature Race, was the fourth race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Nürburgring GP-Strecke in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany on 6 May 2001.[1] The race would see Laurent Aïello sweep to his second victory of the day, edging out Bernd Schneider after an early break.[2]
Aïello would start the Feature from pole position, having secured victory in the Qualifikationslauf ahead of Martin Tomczyk.[3] Peter Dumbreck was the best Mercedes driver in third ahead of Thomas Jäger, while Christijan Albers was the best Opel pilot down in thirteenth.[3]
The start of the race saw Aïello leap into an early lead, while Jäger stormed into second from fourth on the grid to challenge the Frenchman.[2] Tomczyk pulled away cleanly enough to secure third, while Schneider catapulted his car into fourth ahead of teammate Dumbreck.[2] Indeed, Dumbreck would be a victim of a mistake from Tomczyk into turn two, with the young German racer accidentally running the Brit wide and hence dumping the #2 D2 AMG-Mercedes down to seventh.
The early stages saw Aïello establish a lead over Jäger, with the circuit completely dry after rain had affected the Qualifikationslauf.[2] Jäger himself was chased by Tomczyk and Schneider, while Pedro Lamy headed a mob of fellow Mercedes drivers.[2]
Patrick Huisman was the first driver to make his compulsory stop when the pits officially opened, with Aïello the first of the leaders to dive in.[2] Jäger inherited the lead as Tomczyk and Schneider pitted on the next lap, the latter jumping the former, before making his stop on lap ten.[2]
Aïello re-assumed the lead of the race once the stops were completed on lap eighteen, while Jäger found himself in third having been undercut by Schneider.[2] The #1 Mercedes then began to close in on the leading #19 Audi as the race entered its final third, while Jäger drifted back into the sights of Tomczyk.[2]
Yet, try as he might Schneider never managed to challenge Aïello, meaning it was the Frenchman who emerged victorious to announce himself as a title pretender.[2] Schneider and Jäger completed the podium ahead of Tomczyk, with the latter duo finishing nose-to-tail with fifth placed Marcel Fässler.[2] Uwe Alzen was set to finish sixth before his suspension collapsed on the final tour, handing Lamy the position, with Huisman, Dumbreck, Mattias Ekström and Timo Scheider reaping the remaining points.[2]
Background[]
There had been no major changes to the order as a result of the Qualifikationslauf at the Nürburgring, with Bernd Schneider still heading the charge. Indeed, while Peter Dumbreck had moved level with Marcel Fässler for second, but was behind on countback, only Laurent Aïello and Martin Tomczyk had physically moved up the order. The former had moved up ahead of Pedro Lamy, while Tomczyk had shot up into the top ten with his second place.
Likewise, there had been little change in the Teams' Championship, with D2 AMG-Mercedes heading the charge with 38 points to their credit. Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes were next up ahead of Original Teile AMG-Mercedes, while Service 24h AMG-Mercedes had remained in third and fourth. Behind, Abt Sportsline had made ground in fifth on eight points, while Abt Sportsline Junior were on the board as the only movers.
