The 2001 Norisring Feature Race, otherwise known as the ADAC Norisring Trophäe 2001 Feature Race, was the tenth round of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Norisring in Nuremburg, Bavaria, Germany on 8 July 2001.[1] The race would see Uwe Alzen muscle his way past Bernd Schneider after the mid-race stops, although the pair would run nose-to-tail throughout.[2]
The Qualifikationslauf had seen Schneider secure victory and therefore pole position for the Feature, with Alzen having lined up alongside.[3] The #1 Mercedes duly sprinted into the lead at the rolling start, with Alzen tucking in behind, while Marcel Fässler lunged around the outside of Marcel Tiemann for third at the Grundig Kehre.[3]
There was action throughout the field on the opening tour, with Joachim Winkelhock having jumped Christian Abt to lead the anti-Mercedes charge in fifth.[3] Elsewhere, there was a collision at Dutzendteich Kehre, sparked by David Saelens lunging inside Michael Bartels, with the German racer subsequently tipping Abt into a spin.[3] Abt then spun into the path of Saelens and duly got hit nose on by the Belgian racer, which pushed the #18 Abt-Audi wide and broke his front bumper and bonnet.[3]
Fortunately the debris was cleared without outside intervention, with Abt pitting for repairs before being sent on his way without any front-end bodywork.[3] Bartels, meanwhile, would drop to the back after sliding down the escape road, while Saelens ran on with damage to his front splitter.[3]
Peter Dumbreck and Martin Tomczyk were the first drivers to serve their compulsory stops, and would just manage to rejoin on the lead lap.[3] Out front, meanwhile, Schneider would calmly lead Alzen and Fässler, while Tiemann dropped back to keep Winkelhock off the lead trio's tail.[3]
Fässler was the first of the lead trio to blink, with a mistake on lap nineteen resulting in him slapping the wall and smashing his suspension.[3] He duly limped into the pits to retire, leaving Alzen to stalk Schneider for the lead until making his stop on lap 24.[3]
A quick 7.4s stop would get Alzen back out in fourth, with Schnieder diving in at the end of the following lap.[3] An identical stop for the #1 Mercedes would put Schneider out just ahead of Alzen, only for Alzen to throw his #5 Mercedes inside the sister car at the Dutzendteich Kehre to claim the de facto lead.[3]
Once the stops were completed the race was effectively over, with Alzen keeping Schneider at bay to claim victory, while Tiemann claimed a lonely third.[3] Winkelhock claimed fourth to secure Opel's best finish of the season ahead of Dumbreck, while Bartels recovered well to claim seventh ahead of Patrick Huisman.[3] Manuel Reuter, Mattias Ekström and a pre-damaged Tomczyk then completed the scorers, with Darren Turner a lap down in eleventh.[3]
Background[]
Bernd Schneider had extended his Championship lead after the first race at the Norisring, having claimed a further three points for his triumph. Marcel Fässler and Laurent Aïello had held station in second and third on 49 and 37 points respectively, while Uwe Alzen had inched closer to Peter Dumbreck in fifth. Elsewhere, Marcel Tiemann had been the only other scorer, having moved to within a point of Christijan Albers in tenth.
In the Teams' Championship it was still D2 AMG-Mercedes who headed the charge, having moved onto 114 points after Schneider win. Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes were next up in second on 73, while Abt Sportsline and Original Teile AMG-Mercedes had held station in third and fourth. Eschmann AMG-Mercedes then completed the top five, having been one of only three teams to claim points.
