The 2001 Norisring Qualifying Race, otherwise known as the ADAC Norisring Trophäe 2001 Qualifikationslauf, was the ninth race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Norisring in Nuremburg, Bavaria, Germany, on 8 July 2001.[1] The race would see Bernd Schneider sweep to his fourth victory of the season to enhance his Championship lead, and secure pole position for the Feature Race.[2]
Qualifying would the Qualifying Race would see Schneider storm to his sixteenth pole position in the combined history of the DTM and Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft.[3] Stand-in driver Marcel Tiemann was 0.066s behind ahead of Uwe Alzen, while Joachim Winkelhock and Christian Abt grabbed fourth and fifth to lead the charges of Opel and Abt-Audi respectively.[3]
The start saw Schneider ace his start, while Tiemann came under attack from Alzen and duly surrendered second to the #5 Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes at the first hairpin.[2] Behind it was a fairly clean start for the rest of the field, with only minor contact and rubbing through the Grundig Kehre.[2]
The early stages saw Schneider fend off repeated attacks from Alzen, while Manuel Reuter had an early spin at the Schöller S.[2] Patrick Huisman also had an early pirouette at the Grundig Kehre, citing damage to the car after contact with Timo Scheider that ultimately forced him to retire.[2]
Schneider soon broke clear out front, with Alzen stalking him in second with Tiemann in third.[2] Winkelhock was next up in a strong fourth for Opel ahead of Abt's Audi, while behind Reuter was scrapping hard with a battle scarred Martin Tomczyk, who was missing both bonnet and rear bumper after contact early on.[2]
The closing stages were dominated by late progress for Marcel Fässler, who passed both Winkelhock and Abt before chasing after the top three.[2] Winkelhock would try to get some revenge but misjudged his move at the Grundig Kehre, and duly allowed Abt to get past.[2]
Elsewhere, Laurent Aïello had a last minute collision with Thomas Jäger, with the German racer then sliding into Alain Menu and putting both into a spin.[2] Aïello duly shot through the gap to claim tenth, with rear bumper-less stablemate Mattias Ekström also shooting past.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, Schneider was able to ease through the second half of the race to claim victory, with Alzen and Tiemann completing the top three and securing the rest of the points.[2]
Background[]
Bernd Schneider saw his Championship lead balloon out to 25 points after the four round came to a conclusion, his third win of campaign leaving him on 74 points. Marcel Fässler had remained his closest challenger in second, while Laurent Aïello had retained third in spite of skipping the race to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Peter Dumbreck had, however, moved level with the Frenchman on 37 points, while Christijan Albers and Michael Bartels had joined the scorers' list.
In the Teams' Championship it was D2 AMG-Mercedes who continued to lead the charge, leaving the Sachsenring with a healthy margin of 40 points. Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes were next up in second on 71 points as their sister squad's main challengers, while Abt Sportsline headed the anti-Mercedes charge in third on 47. Original Teile AMG-Mercedes had moved to within ten of the Audi squad in fourth, while OPC Team Holzer II had joined the fray in ninth with a single point.
