The 2001 Oschersleben Qualifying Race, otherwise known as the ADAC-Preis von Sachsen-Anhalt 2001 Qualifikationslauf, was the fifth race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters staged at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in Oschersleben, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, on 20 May 2001.[1] The race would see Marcel Fässler sweep to his maiden DTM victory from pole position, a result which also earned him pole for the Feature Race.[2]
Ahead of the race it was revealed that Pedro Lamy had left Team Rosberg, citing the fact that he had been handed a "2000-spec" CLK-DTM and hence was not in a position to win races.[3] His seat was hence taken by Belgian racer David Saelens, who arrived in the DTM after a relatively strong sophomore season in the International F3000 Championship in 2000.[4]
Qualifying had seen Fässler sweep to pole, beating the best lap from 2000 1.434s to secure his maiden pole position.[5] However, he only just defeated Laurent Aïello by 0.010s as the Frenchman again showed strong pace, while Bernd Schneider claimed third, just 0.031s back.[5] Over at Opel, meanwhile, it would be another disappointing session, with Manuel Reuter their best placed driver in twelfth.[5]
Fässler got the jump on Aïello at the start of the race, and would ease into the first corner without the need to defend the inside line from the Frenchman.[2] Behind, Schneider and Uwe Alzen fought side-by-side for third throughout the first half of the opening lap, with the rest of the field settling in behind them.[2]
The race quickly settled down, with Fässler leading the charge from Aïello, while Schneider stalked them in third ahead of Alzen.[2] Elsewhere, Saelens left his mark on Peter Mamerow, damaging the Opel's suspension, while Marcel Tiemann, standing in for Bernd Mayländer spun Joachim Winkelhock to the back of the field.[2]
Fässler escaped from Aïello during the middle phase of the race, with the Frenchman instead having to watch his mirrors to keep track on Schneider.[2] Behind the race developed into a similar procession, with no major changes to the order around the twisting circuit.[2]
With that the race was run, with Fässler claiming fastest lap late on to secure his first Grand Slam having led every lap.[2] Aïello and Schneider claimed second and third behind the Swiss racer, while Alzen, Peter Dumbreck and Mattias Ekström completed the top six.[2]
Background[]
The Championship remained in the grip of Bernd Schneider as the second weekend of the season came to a close, the German racer having claimed 38 points over the opening two rounds. Laurent Aïello was now his closest challenger in second on 27 points, while Marcel Fässler had slipped to third on 23. Thomas Jäger was next up in fourth ahead of Peter Dumbreck, as Patrick Huisman, Mattias Ekström and Timo Scheider had all added their names to the scoresheet.
In the Teams' Championship it was D2 AMG-Mercedes whom led the charge, having moved onto 56 points after two rounds. Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes were next up in second on 37 points, while Abt Sportsline had been the weekend's biggest gainers having moved into third. Original Teile AMG-Mercedes and Service 24h AMG-Mercedes then completed the top five, while OPC Team Holzer I were the only Opel team on the scoresheet in eighth.
