The ADAC-Preis Sachsenring 2001 Feature Race, otherwise known as the 2001 Sachsenring Feature Race, was the eighth race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Sachsenring in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Saxony, Germany on 17 June 2001.[1] The race would see Bernd Schneider snatch victory to enhance his Championship lead, the track had dried completely after the earlier race.[2]
The Qualifikationslauf had seen Schneider's teammate Peter Dumbreck secure pole position for the Feature race, with Mattias Ekström starting alongside.[3] The Brit duly jetted into an early lead ahead of the Swede to secure the lead, while Schneider lost fourth to Patrick Huisman by gambling on an outside line through turn one.[3]
A mistake from Turner further around the opening tour allowed Ekström to secure the lead, while Christian Abt narrowly missed out on following his teammate through.[3] Huisman, meanwhile, would pick up damage to the front of his car and begin trailing smoke, with his sudden drop in pace causing chaos behind.[3]
Indeed, as the field charged into the penultimate corner Uwe Alzen tried to lunge past Hubert Haupt as the pair passed the limping Huisman.[3] Haupt and Alzen duly began to spin, with Alzen also pushing one of the Team Rosberg Mercedes into a spin across the circuit.[3] Kris Nissen then tried some high speed manoeuvres to avoid the errant Mercedes, only to lose control and slam into the outside wall.[3]
Nissen's Abt-Audi was destroyed, with the Opel of Peter Mamerow also hitting the Audi as it came to rest.[3] Fortunately Nissen escaped without injury, with the Safety Car scrambled to cover the accident as Schneider led a group of cars into the pits for their mandatory stops.[3]
The race resumed with Ekström heading the charge ahead of Dumbreck, while Schnieder was the best of the stoppers in seventh ahead of Marcel Fässler.[3] Those two began to carve their way up the field after the restart, moving into fourth within five laps, while Ekström, Dumbreck and Abt tried to break clear.[3]
Ekström stopped on lap thirteen, while Dumbreck and Abt stopped a lap later to hand the lead to Schneider, who was already cruising out front.[2] Christijan Albers was next up in second ahead of Fässler, while Ekström and co. had slipped outside of the top five, but were running quicker than those around them.[2]
With that the race was run, with Schneider charging across the line almost half a minute clear to secure victory, while Albers was a lonely second.[2] Huisman was next up in third ahead of his temporary teammate Marcel Tiemann, with Ekström having climbed to fifth ahead of Dumbreck.[2] Martin Tomczyk was next up ahead of a frustrated Fässler, whose pace had collapsed late on, while Abt and Michael Bartels claimed the remaining points.[2]
Background[]
There was little change to the Championship after the opening battle of the Sachsenring weekend, with Bernd Schneider having retained his eight point advantage. Marcel Fässler had likewise held station in second ahead of the absent Laurent Aïello, who also held third. Peter Dumbreck was next up in fourth after his maiden triumph, inching to within six of Aïello, while Mattias Ekström had moved ahead of Patrick Huisman for tenth.
In the Teams' Championship it was D2 AMG-Mercedes who remained at the head of the hunt, and had increased their lead to seventeen points. Sister squad Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes were their closest challengers in second on 68 points, while Abt Sportsline had retained third on 45. Original Teile AMG-Mercedes occupied fourth on 22, while Abt Sportsline Junior had moved to within two of the Persson squad in fifth.
