The ADAC-Preis Sachsenring 2001 Qualifikationslauf, otherwise known as the 2001 Sashsenring Qualifying Race, was the seventh race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Sachsenring in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Saxony, Germany, on 17 June 2001.[1] The race would see Peter Dumbreck claim his maiden DTM pole and victory, leading throughout the race despite a race long challenge from Swedish youth Mattias Ekström.[2]
Qualifying for the Qualifikationslauf was staged in wet conditions, although those who got in their times early were able to qualify on a largely dry circuit.[3] As such, a strong opening blow by Dumbreck left the Brit on pole position ahead of Ekström, with a jumbled grid allowing Christijan Albers to claim third, and Michael Bartels to secure fourth in the first of the otherwise out-classed Opels.[3]
Dumbreck duly aced his start on a wet circuit, although Ekström almost managed to challenge for second before slotting in behind the Brit.[4] Behind, Bartels got the jump on Albers to secure third, although his attempts to claim the inside line for turn one resulted in the #11 Opel getting spun across the nose of the #15 Mercedes.[4]
Christian Abt took advantage of that collision to secure third, while Ekström made several attempts to pass Dumbreck for the lead.[4] Indeed, his best chance came at the start of lap two after getting a good run on the #2 Mercedes, although Dumbreck managed to repulse the move.[4]
Elsewhere, Championship Bernd Schneider was storming through the field, having qualified in a lowly twentieth after mistiming his run.[4] Indeed, the German racer would leap into eighth before the end of lap two, before getting involved in an excellent scrap with Martin Tomczyk and Manuel Reuter for sixth.[4] That was, until Tomczyk tried too hard to keep the veterans at bay, caught a kerb and spun.[4]
Once clear of Reuter and Tomczyk Schneider's crusade carried him onto the back of the two Eschmann AMG-Mercedes in fourth and fifth, which he passed in quick succession.[4] That would be as good as it got for Schneider as the leaders had already broken clear, as behind Tomczyk's race was hampered by a second spin into the gravel late on.[4]
With that the race was run, with Dumbreck sweeping across the line to claim victory ahead of Ekström and Abt.[4] Schneider was fourth ahead of Patrick Huisman, Marcel Fässler and Marcel Tiemann, while Reuter was the best of the Opel racers in eighth.[4]
Background[]
Bernd Schneider had retained the lead in the Championship after the third weekend of racing came to a close, having moved onto 54 points for the campaign. However, race winner Marcel Fässler had closed the gap to second with 46 points, while Laurent Aïello had closed to within fourteen of the leader after a strong weekend. Peter Dumbreck was next up in fourth on 28 points ahead of Uwe Alzen, while Marcel Tiemann had become the season's fifteenth different scorer.
In the Teams' Championship it was D2 AMG-Mercedes whom still led the charge, having moved onto 82 points for the campaign. Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes were next up in second on 68 points, while Abt Sportsline were in third on 44 points. Fourth place was occupied by Original Teile AMG-Mercedes on 22 points ahead of Service 24h AMG-Mercedes, while OPC Team Holzer I were still Opel's only scorers in eighth.
