The 2001 Zandvoort Qualifying Race, formally known as the Rundstreckenrennen Zandvoort 2001 Qualifikationslauf, was the seventeenth race of the 2001 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in Zandvoort, North Holland, Netherlands on 23 September 2001.[1] The race would see Christian Abt secure his first and only DTM victory and Grand Slam, as the series made its debut in the Netherlands.[2]
Ahead of the race there would be an agreement between the race organisers and ITR e.V. to ban overtaking into the first corner at the start of the race.[2] The ban was implemented in a bid to stop the increasing number of first corner incidents that had thinned the DTM field in recent races, with the drivers reluctantly agreeing to the measures.[2]
The race was also the first DTM round to be staged after the tragic events of the September 11 Attack on the World Trade Centre in New York, USA.[2] As a result the majority of the support programme was cancelled as a mark of respect to those who had died in the Attack.[2]
Qualifying for the Qualifikationslauf had seen Abt charge to his maiden DTM pole position, beating young stablemate Mattias Ekström by 0.035s.[3] Peter Dumbreck was best of the rest in the lead Mercedes ahead of Patrick Huisman, while Manuel Reuter secured tenth as the best of the Opels.[3]
The overtake ban worked very effectively at the start, with Abt instantly sprinting clear of Ekström, while Huisman had to back off from an attack on Dumbreck and had to settle for fourth.[4] The rest of the field would make it through cleanly, although it was only when Marcel Fässler attacked teammate Uwe Alzen halfway around the first lap that there was any action of note.[4]
The two Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes would run side-by-side for almost half a lap, with Fässler eventually gaining the upper hand.[4] However, their fight was so intense that it dropped them off the back of fifth placed Laurent Aïello, stifling their afternoons, while Martin Tomczyk almost caused an accident after spinning in the middle of the pack.[4]
Bernd Mayländer was the next driver to have an accident, with a seeming failure causing him to slam into the barriers and ruining his chances of racing in the Feature.[4] Fortunately his car was removed from the barriers without outside intervention.[4]
Out front, meanwhile, Abt would control the race well to secure victory, despite the fact that Ekström closed to within two tenths of him after late pressure from Dumbreck.[4] Huisman was next up in fourth ahead of Aïello and Fässler, with the top six finishing nose-to-tail ahead of Alzen and Christijan Albers.[4]
Background[]
Victory for the sixth time in 2001 had ensured that Bernd Schneider had claimed the title with two rounds and four races to spare, having reached an unassailable tally of 137 in Austria. That had therefore left him 60 clear of second placed Uwe Alzen, while Laurent Aïello was a further two behind. Indeed, the fight for second was set to rumble through to the end of the season, with Peter Dumbreck also in contention having stayed within ten of Alzen.
In the Teams' Championship the title had yet to be decided, although it was going to go to one of the two HWA Team entries. Of those, it was near impossible for D2 AMG-Mercedes to not end the season as Champions, for they held a huge advantage of 67 points over Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes, with just 80 points left on offer. They would therefore get their first chance to claim the title in Zandvoort, while Warsteiner would likely need a set of one-two finishes and see D2 AMG fail to score just to keep the fight alive.

- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
Milestones[]
- Maiden pole position for Christian Abt
- Maiden (and only) victory for Abt.
- Abt also claimed his maiden (and only) Grand Slam.
- Fifth win for ABT Sportsline as an entrant.
- Fifth victory for Audi as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
Bernd Schneider had already secured the Championship title ahead of the trip to Zandvoort, and had failed to add to his tally in the Qualifying Race. The fight for second hence took priority, with Peter Dumbreck having been the only driver in that battle to have scored. He therefore moved to within nine points of second placed Uwe Alzen, with third placed Laurent Aïello and fifth placed Marcel Fässler having failed to score.
In the Teams' Championship D2 AMG-Mercedes had inched closer to the crown, with Dumbreck's point putting them on 205 for the campaign. That left them 68 points clear of Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes ahead of the Zandvoort Feature, meaning they needed just one of their drivers to finish in the top five to claim the title. Behind, Abt Sportsline had inched away from Eschmann AMG-Mercedes in the fight for third, with no changes to the rest of the field.
