The 2002 Hockenheim Finale Qualifying Race, formally known as the DMV-Preis Hockenheim 2002 Qualifikationslauf, was the nineteenth and penultimate race of the 2002 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 6 October 2002.[1] The race, which was the first DTM race to be held on the revised Hockenheim Grand Prix circuit, would see freshly crowned Laurent Aïello secure victory ahead of vanquished Champion Bernd Schneider.[2]
Qualifying had seen the two DTM Champions duel for pole, with Schneider edging out his French rival by 0.035s after exchanging times throughout the session.[3] Behind, Karl Wendlinger and Mattias Ekström shared the second row, while Uwe Alzen and Marcel Fässler shared the third.[3]
The start of the race saw Schneider slightly bog down, allowing Aïello to sweep into the first corner ahead to secure the lead.[4] Schneider instead found himself fending off Wendlinger and Ekström, while behind Martin Tomczyk was spun around in the re-profiled first corner.[4]
The first time the field entered the hairpin there would be drama, as Jean Alesi misjudged a lunge on Alain Menu, and smacked into the #18 Opel.[4] That contact then saw Alesi bounce over the top of Menu as the Opel spun into Fässler, with Alesi then landing onto of the bonnet of the #6 Mercedes.[4]
The wounded trio of cars would all limp back to the pits without outside intervention as, out front, Aïello built his lead.[4] Behind, Schneider would secure second and ease clear of Wendlinger and Ekström, leaving the two Red Bull liveried Abt-Audis to fight for third.[4]
Ekström eventually managed to pass Wendlinger into the hairpin, allowing him to go hunting off after Schneider for second.[4] Elsewhere, Tomczyk's race was ended by contact with Thomas Jäger, while Patrick Huisman had a water leak that ended his race.[4]
Out front, meanwhile, new Champion Aïello would control the race to secure a tidy victory, two seconds clear of Schneider in second.[4] Ekström, meanwhile, would prove unable to close on Schneider and so had to settle for third, with Wendlinger, Abt and Manuel Reuter completing the top six.[4]
Background[]
For the final round of the 2002 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship the field would gather at the Series' new home of the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany in early October, albeit with a new version of the infamous German circuit to contend with.[1] Indeed, in a bid to improve safety and attendance figures, the long looping Grand Prix circuit that disappeared into the forest had been torn up, and a new 4.575 km layout within the bounds of the old circuit had been created.[1] Indeed, the updated circuit would see the field divert from the loop with a right-left complex onto a long curve named Parabolica, before rejoining the old layout via a hairpin that now formed turn six, before another brief deviation from the old circuit with a new complex of corners underneath the "Mercedes Arena".[1]
Aïello's Ascension[]
Sixth place in Zandvoort, with defending Champion Bernd Schneider only claiming second on the road, was enough to hand Laurent Aïello the Championship crown with one round to spare, the Frenchman having moved onto 66 points for the campaign. Schneider himself, meanwhile, was fourteen behind with thirteen points left to fight for at the finale in Hockenheim, and would instead have to focus on securing second. However, the #1 Mercedes pilot was nine ahead of Mattias Ekström in third, which meant the Swede would have to likely win the final Feature Race of the season and see Schneider fail to score.
In the Teams' Championship Team Abt Sportsline continued to lead the way with one full round to go, although their tally of 83 points was not enough for them to secure the title. Indeed, their closest challengers Vodafone AMG-Mercedes were only seven behind ahead of the finale, with 21 points available for Teams' in the final race. A variety of results would hence hand either of the two squads the title, while OPC Team Phoenix led the Opel challenge in fifth.

- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
Milestones[]
- Final Qualifikationslauf to be staged.
- Twelfth win for Laurent Aïello.
- ABT Sportsline claimed their seventeenth victory as an entrant.
- Abt-Audi earned their seventeenth win as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
Laurent Aïello had added to his Championship winning tally with his eighth victory of the campaign, the Frenchman having moved onto 69 points for the campaign. That meant his lead over Bernd Schneider had increased to fifteen points ahead of the finale, while the German racer himself held a ten point margin over Mattias Ekström. That meant that Schneider could only be displaced if Ekström won the finale with Schneider failing to score, while the Swede himself was guaranteed third at worst.
In the Teams' Championship Team Abt Sportsline had inched closer to their maiden crown, the German squad having moved onto 84 points for the campaign. That meant they held a six point margin over Vodafone AMG-Mercedes ahead of the finale, with the lead Mercedes squad needing to beat the top Abt-Audi in the final race to hold onto their title. Third, meanwhile, was set to be a scrap between their sister teams, with Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes ahead of Team Abt by three points.
