The 2002 Hockenheim Opening Qualifying Race, otherwise known as the ADAC-Preis Hockenheim 2002 Qualifikationslauf, was the opening race of the 2002 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on 21 April 2002.[1] The race would see Martin Tomczyk secure his maiden DTM victory, as Abt-Audi dominated a race meeting for the first time.[2]
There were various changes to the series ahead of the new season, with the DTM adopting a new point scoring format, the HANS safety device, as well as using standing starts for the first time.[3] Indeed, for 2002 the DTM would use the 10-6-4-3-2-1 point format used in Formula One to reward drivers in Feature Races, while the qualifying races would awarded points to the top three drivers as before.[3]
Elsewhere there were several changes to the entry list, as ex-F1 racers Jean Alesi and Karl Wendlinger joined the field.[3] Alesi signed up to partner defending Champion Bernd Schneider at Mercedes and HWA Team, while Wendlinger would partner Mattias Ekström at Abt-Audi.[3] Opel, meanwhile, would shuffle their drivers between their three outfits, although they did not add any new faces.[3]
Qualifying for the first Qualifikationslauf of the campaign would see Abt-Audi dominate, as Laurent Aïello led Tomczyk to a front-row lock-out.[4] Indeed, only Opel's lead driver Manuel Reuter would get amongst the Abt-Audis, claiming fourth on the grid as the Ingolstadt manufacturer got all of their cars in the top six, while Schneider led the Mercedes charge from seventh.[4]
Tomczyk made the best getaway from the grid at the start, sprinting ahead of Aïello, as behind Ekström led Christian Abt past Reuter.[5] Timo Scheider, meanwhile, would launch up to trail his squad mate Reuter in sixth, while Schneider slipped to eighth.[5]
Overall the start was fairly clean, although one of the Mercedes would get spun around in the first corner at the back of the field.[5] Out front, meanwhile, Tomczyk would escape up the road from Aïello, as the leading quartet of Abt-Audis escaped from Reuter.[5]
Indeed, it was a very tame race in the early stages, with the only incident of note seeing Patrick Huisman and Christijan Albers collide, resulting in Albers getting stuck in the gravel at the Agip Kurve.[5] Fortunately the Dutchman's car was dragged away without disrupting the race, and hence allowed the fighting to continue in the middle of the pack.[5]
Elsewhere, Wendlinger had an exciting moment at turn one, spinning all on his own while challenging Scheider but remaining on the circuit.[5] Schneider, the first man on sight, had to slam on the brakes, resulting in him falling to the back of a quintet of fellow Mercedes pilots, which scattered around the errant Audi.[5]
Reuter was the next man to have a drama, running wide at the Sachs Kurve, before spinning to the inside of the circuit due to the dust and camber.[5] Fortunately those behind would have fast enough reactions to avoid the now perpendicular Opel, although Peter Dumbreck lost enough momentum to fall behind Marcel Fässler.[5]
Out front, meanwhile, there would be no stopping Tomczyk, who cruised to his maiden victory safely ahead of stablemates Aïello and Ekström.[5] Abt was a distant fourth ahead of Scheider, with Fässler, Dumbreck and debutante Alesi rounding out the top eight.[5]
