The 2002 Lausitzring Qualifying Race, otherwise known as the DTM Lausitz 2002 Qualifikationslauf, was the eleventh race of the 2002 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany on 14 July 2002.[1] The race would see Laurent Aïello claim another strong victory on his march to the 2002 title, beating Bernd Schneider by almost two seconds.[2]
Qualifying to set the grid for the Qualifikationslauf would see Aïello secure his third pole of the campaign, defeating Schneider in a duel for the top spot on the grid.[3] Christian Abt was best of the rest in third ahead of Mattias Ekström and Martin Tomczyk as Abt-Audi dominated the top end of the field, with Joachim Winkelhock the best Opel pilot in eighth.[3]
The start of the race saw the Abt-Audis swarm to the front of the field, with Aïello drifting across to block Schneider, while Abt and Tomczyk pulled up along the outside of the #1 Mercedes.[4] Abt duly eased ahead of the Mercedes to secure second behind Aïello, while Schneider and Tomczyk ran side-by-side until they entered turn five.[4]
Behind the start and the opening tour would prove to be fairly tame, with Aïello storming away from Abt, while Schneider enhanced his grip on third.[4] Tomczyk, meanwhile, would slip back behind Ekström after the #1 Mercedes had elbowed its way back ahead, while Uwe Alzen found himself fighting hard with Manuel Reuter for eighth.[4]
Schneider would move back ahead of Abt at the end of the second tour, with a well timed lunge at his compatriot onto the banking getting the job done.[4] Behind the order was static with Ekström holding off Tomczyk, as Christijan Albers picked up a puncture and was forced to stop.[4]
Indeed, the race would run clean through to the chequered flag, with no major changes to the order throughout.[4] Aïello hence claimed a comfortable victory ahead of Schneider, while Abt kept Ekström at bay to secure third and the final point, while Yves Olivier was the race's only retirement after an unspecified issue.[4]
Background[]
Laurent Aïello headed the Championship charge at the halfway point of the season, and left Nuremberg with a strong 25 point lead. Mattias Ekström was his closest challenger in second, with less than half of the Frenchman's points tally, while Bernd Schneider sat in third on 21, two further back. Jean Alesi and Christian Abt completed the half-time top five, with fifteen drivers on the scoresheet after ten races.
In the Teams' Championship it was Team Abt Sportsline who led the charge with the season at its halfway point, having claimed 60 points in the first half of the season. Vodafone AMG-Mercedes were next up in second, nineteen behind, while Team Abt occupied third with 26 points. The top five was then completed by OPC Euroteam and OPC Team Holzer, with nine of the eleven teams having scored.

Milestones[]
- Eleventh victory for Laurent Aïello.
- ABT Sportsline claimed their fourteenth victory as an entrant.
- Abt-Audi registered their fourteenth victory as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
There had been little change to the Championship at the end of the eleventh race of the 2002 campaign, as Laurent Aïello inched closer to the Championship title after claiming his 51st point of the season. Mattias Ekström was his closest challenger in second, with less than half of the points of his stablemate on 23, while Bernd Schneider had moved level with the young Swede in third. Jean Alesi and Christian Abt then completed the top five, with no new names on the scoresheet.
Likewise, there had been little change to the order of the Teams' Championship, as Team Abt Sportsline once again added to their lead. They had moved 21 clear of closest rivals Vodafone AMG-Mercedes in second, the only other scorers in the Qualifikationslauf, while Team Abt had held third on 26 points.
