2003 | 2005 |
The 2004 DTM Season, formally known as the 2004 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, was the fifth edition of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters since the series was reformed in 2000, and eighteenth year of premier touring car racing in Germany.[1] The season would see Mattias Ekström and Gary Paffett battle for the Championship, which consisted of ten races and an additional non-Championship meeting in Shanghai, China.[1]
Ahead of the season there would be a major change to the rulebook, with the coupé style bodywork replaced by saloon body-shells.[2] As a result all three manufacturers would have to build new cars, albeit using the same V8 engine formula as before, while privateer teams were allowed to run year-old coupés to reduce their costs.[2]
Bernd Schneider would start the season as the reigning Champion, once again partnering Christijan Albers after their duel for the crown in 2003.[3] As a result, their team Vodafone / DaimlerChrysler Bank AMG-Mercedes would open the season as the reigning Teams' Champions, while AMG-Mercedes were the ruling Manufacturers' Champions.[3]
The season would open at the Hockenheimring on 18 April, with Paffett securing victory on the opening day.[4] The series then headed to Portugal at the Circuito do Estoril for the first time for the second round, with Albers claiming his first win of the campaign.[5]
Ekström announced himself as a title pretender with victory at the following two rounds at Adria and Lausitz, before Paffett claimed his second win at the Norisring.[6] After a mid-July trip to Shanghai the season resumed at the Nürburgring, with Paffett again claiming victory.[7]
Yet, Ekström would ultimately seize the title with two more victories at the following two rounds, with his fourth win of the campaign in Brno securing the crown.[8] Sixth at the season finale in Hockenheim left the Swede on 74 points, seventeen ahead of Paffett in second.[9]
The Teams' Championship, meanwhile, would be settled in favour of Audi Sport Team Abt, who claimed 113 points and four wins.[9] Vodafone / DamilerChrysler Bank AMG-Mercedes finished second, while Audi, in their first season as an official manufacturer, claimed the Manufacturers' Championship by just four points ahead of AMG-Mercedes.[9]
Elsewhere, Tom Kristensen, Schneider and Albers would claim victories across the season, while Paffett claimed victory in the non-Championship battle of Shanghai.[10] There had been plans to run two races at the Shanghai Street Circuit, although the first race was abandoned after a drain cover was ripped up and caused heavy damage to Bernd Mayländer's car.[10]
Background[]
Calendar[]
There would be some notable changes to the calendar for the 2004 season, with the rounds at Donington Park, UK, and the Red Bull Ring, Austria, replaced by trips to Estoril in Portugal and Brno in the Czech Republic.[1] Those would add to rounds at the Adria International Raceway and Circuit Park Zandvoort to leave four races outside of Germany, with an additional non-Championship round to be held mid-way through the season.[1]
However, the season would open in typical fashion, with the Championship battle commencing at the Hockenheimring on 18 April.[1] The 2 May would then see the DTM make its Portuguese debut at Estoril, before moving across to Adria in Italy a fortnight later for the third round.[1] The Lausitzring would be the series' next port-of-call on 6 June, before the annual battle of Nuremburg was staged on the 27 June.[1]
The summer break would follow the trip to Nuremburg, although it was to be broken up by a non-Championship round in Shanghai, China, on 18 July.[1]
The 1 August would see the series resume at the Nürburgring on the Sprint Strecke, before moving to Oschersleben a week later.[1] Another trip to the beaches at Zandvoort in the Netherlands would follow on 5 September, before a hop back across Europe to race at Brno for the first time on 19 September.[1] With that, the Championship would return to the Hockenheimring for the season finale, set for 3 October 2004.[1]
