The 2004 Hockenheim Finale Race, otherwise known as the DTM Hockenheim Finale 2004 Race, was the tenth and final race of the 2004 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 3 October 2004.[1] The race would see Bernd Schneider secure his first win of the campaign, as Audi secured their first Manufacturers' Championship title.[2]
Martin Tomczyk would secure pole position for the season finale in qualifying, defeating Schneider in Super Pole by just 0.013s.[3] Jean Alesi and Gary Paffett would share the second row ahead of soon-to-be-crowned Champion Mattias Ekström, while Marcel Fässler led the Opel challenge in sixth.[3]
The start of the race saw Tomczyk storm into the lead unopposed, with Schneider instead having to defend the inside line into turn one to hold second.[4] Behind the rest of the field made it off the grid without issue, although through the first corner Fässler was tipped into a spin after contact with one of the Audis.[4]
Schneider would steadily reel in Tomczyk over the rest of the opening tour, as behind Christijan Albers stormed past Alesi and Paffett to secure third.[4] Ekström and Tom Kristensen would also engage in a ferocious fight which later included Paffett, while Fässler rejoined at the back of the field.[4]
The early laps saw the order stabilise at the head of the field, with Tomczyk still fending off Schneider, while Alesi and Albers gave chase.[4] Fässler, meanwhile, misjudge a lunge of Jarek Janiš and smashed into Peter Dumbreck at the hairpin, causing race ending damage to his car.[4]
Tomczyk became the first of the drivers to stop at the end of lap five, trailed into the pits by Alesi, Albers and Kristensen.[4] Schneider and Paffett stopped a lap later, the #1 Mercedes rejoining just behind Tomczyk, while Paffett moved back ahead of Albers and Kristensen.[4]
The second stint saw Schneider go on the offensive, the defending Champion's first bid for the lead coming as he and Tomczyk caught a yet to stop Laurent Aïello.[4] A few laps later and Schendier managed to elbow his way past the younger German pilot at the hairpin, just before both dived into the pits for their second stops.[4]
With that the race was effectively run, with Schneider sweeping across the line to claim victory, even surviving a mistake into turn two that saw his lead all but disappear.[4] Tomczyk finished second ahead of Paffett, while Kristensen battled past Alesi with Ekström close behind in sixth.[4] Albers was a lonely seventh, while Christian Abt rounded out the scorers in eighth, his first point of the campaign.[4]
Background[]
After six months and nine races the 2004 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters returned to the place where the season had started, and the traditional home of the revived DTM's final round.[1] Indeed, for the final round of the fifth DTM season the Series would return to the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in early October.[1] The relatively new Grand Prix layout at the Hockenheimring would again host the series, and was unchanged since the previous visit in April.[1]
Exceptional Ekström[]
Mattias Ekström's fourth win of the campaign was enough for the Swede to secure the DTM Championship with a race to spare. Indeed, second placed Gary Paffett had slipped twenty points behind and hence could not overhaul the Swede, and instead found himself fighting for second. Christijan Albers was the only man who could deny the Brit from the runner-up spot, three behind, while Albers himself was ten clear of Tom Kristensen in fourth.
The Teams' Championship was also over before the Hockenheim finale, with Audi Team Abt having moved out of reach in Brno. The German squad had a 28 point advantage over Vodafone/DC Bank AMG-Mercedes ahead of the finale, with only 18 points left to fight for. The Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, would go down to the finale in Hockenheim, with Audi nine ahead of AMG-Mercedes with one race to go.
