The 2004 Hockenheim Opening Race, formally known as the DTM Hockenheim Opening 2004, was the opening round of the 2004 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 18 April 2004.[1] The race would see Gary Paffett sweep to his maiden victory in the Series, as the DTM introduced a new rulebook for the fifth season of the revived Championship.[2]
Indeed, for 2004 the DTM would go back to its origins, with the new rulebook declaring that manufacturers would have to build cars based on saloon cars, rather than the coupes that had raced between 2000 and 2003.[2] The change to the rulebook would prompt Audi to join the series fully as a manufacturer, joining Mercedes-AMG and Opel with full factory entries.[2]
There had also been a major shuffle in terms of drivers, with Opel making the biggest wave by signing 2002 DTM Champion Laurent Aïello for ABT Sportsline, as well as ex-Formula One ace Heinz-Harald Frentzen.[2] Audi would replace Aïello with 1991 Champion Frank Biela, who joined semi-customer entrants Joest Racing, while also adding five-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen to their line-up.[2]
Qualifying would see Jean Alesi open the season by claiming pole position in the first Super Pole session of the campaign, beating Martin Tomczyk by two tenths.[3] Kristensen was the best of the rookies in third ahead of Paffett, defending Champion Bernd Schneider would start from fifth, while Timo Scheider led the Opel charge from seventh.[3]
