The 2004 Lausitzring Race, formally known as DTM Lausitz 2004, was the fourth race of the 2004 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany, on 6 June 2004.[1] The race would see Mattias Ekström claim the honours, after Gary Paffett was stripped of victory for running out of fuel after passing the chequered flag.[2]
Qualifying would see Christijan Albers slither to pole position in a rain affected Super Pole shootout, the Dutchman beating Ekström by 0.485s.[3] Jean Alesi would then head Peter Dumbreck on the second row, while Bernd Schneider and Timo Scheider shared the third row.[3]
Background[]
After two rounds in Portugal and Italy the DTM returned to home soil for the fourth race of the season, with the Series returning to the Lausitzring.[1] Unchanged for the 2004 visit, the DTM would not attempt to use the banked first corner after aborting that plan midway through the 2003 meeting after several high-speed accidents.[1][4] The entry list, meanwhile, would be unchanged for the fourth race of the season, amid news of an additional non-Championship round and a promotional event for the Series.[5]
A Run in Two Cities[]
The first news story to emerge would be a deal for the DTM to complete a non-Championship race in the Chinese city of Shanghai, as China prepared to increase its global motorsports presence.[5] The event would use a new 2.480 km Street Circuit in Pudong, Shangahi, rather than the new Shanghai International Circuit, which was scheduled for 17 - 18 July.[5] Teams and manufacturers would not be required to attend as the event was essentially an exhibition, with Opel the only manufacturer initially deciding not to send their full compliment of DTM cars.[5][6]
Elsewhere, the DTM would make an appearance in Berlin, Germany, as part of the celebrations ahead of the 2003–04 DFB-Pokal Final on 29 June.[7] Using a temporary 'circuit' near the Brandenburg Gate, Christian Abt, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Stefan Mücke, representing each DTM manufacturer would complete demonstration runs, before a photoshoot in front of Berlin's famous landmark.[7] After that the three DTM cars would run with a police escort to the Olympiastadion in Berlin, and then to the Sony Centre for the post-final celebrations.[7]
Adria Adjustments[]
There had been no changes to the top of the field in the Drivers' Championship after the third round of the season in Adria, with Christijan Albers having held the lead at the head of table. The Dutchman had seen his lead reduced to two points by Adria winner Mattias Ekström, while both had moved clear of Gary Paffett in third, eleven off of Albers. Martin Tomczyk and Tom Kristensen then completed the top five, while Stefan Mücke had become the twelfth scorer of the season.
Audi Team Abt continued to head the charge in the Teams' Championship, and had increased their advantage to five over closest challengers Vodafone/DC Bank AMG-Mercedes. AMG-Mercedes were next up in third, seven behind their sister squad, while OPC Team Phoenix were up to fourth ahead of Audi Team Abt Sportsline. In the Manufacturers' Championship AMG-Mercedes had moved back to the top of the table, having moved eight clear of Audi in second.

- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
- * Paffett was disqualified from the race for failing to have 1.5 litres of fuel left in his fuel tank after the race.[2]
Milestones[]
- Fifth victory for Mattias Ekström.
- ABT Sportsline claimed their twentieth victory as an entrant.
- Audi earned their twentieth win as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
Mattias Ekström moved to the top of the Championship with his second victory of the campaign, level on points with Christijan Albers but ahead of the Dutchman due to holding two victories to Albers' one. Those two were on their own at the head of the hunt, Gary Paffett's disqualification having left him nineteen off the lead, while Jean Alesi was in fourth on twelve. Martin Tomczyk then completed the top five, while Marcel Fässler and Manuel Reuter had joined the scorers' list.
Audi Team Abt had retained their lead in the Teams' Championship after the trip to Lausitz, holding a one point lead over Vodafone/DC AMG-Mercedes. AMG-Mercedes were next up in third, eighteen off the leaders, while OPC Team Phoenix had held fourth a further ten behind. Elsewhere, AMG-Mercedes had held the lead in the Manufacturers' Championship after the fourth race, the Stuttgart squad thirteen clear of Audi in second.
