The 2004 Norisring Race, otherwise known as the ADAC Norisring Trophäe 2004, was the fifth race of the 2004 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Norisring in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, on 27 June 2004.[1] The race would see Gary Paffett claim his second win of the campaign, benefitting from a mistake in the pits from Christijan Albers.[2]
Qualifying had seen Jean Alesi secure pole position in Super Pole, edging out teammate Paffett as the secondary HWA duo locked out the front row.[3] Albers was next up in third ahead of Timo Scheider, while Tom Kristensen was the best of the Audi pilots in sixth behind Bernd Schneider.[3]
Background[]
After another three week break the 2004 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters returned to racing, with the Series returning to one of its most popular events, the ADAC Norisring Trophäe at the Norisring.[1] The street circuit located in the shadow of the Zeppelinhaupttribüne near lake Dutzendteich was unchanged for the 2004 visit, and would hence remain the shortest circuit on the DTM's annual tour.[1] Likewise, there would be stability on the entry list ahead of the trip to Nuremberg, with no changes to the driver line-ups ahead of the fifth race of the campaign.[1]
Ekström Endeavour[]
Mattias Ekström moved to the top of the Championship with his second victory of the campaign, level on points with Christijan Albers but ahead of the Dutchman due to holding two victories to Albers' one. Those two were on their own at the head of the hunt, Gary Paffett's disqualification having left him nineteen off the lead, while Jean Alesi was in fourth on twelve. Martin Tomczyk then completed the top five, while Marcel Fässler and Manuel Reuter had joined the scorers' list.
Audi Team Abt had retained their lead in the Teams' Championship after the trip to Lausitz, holding a one point lead over Vodafone/DC AMG-Mercedes. AMG-Mercedes were next up in third, eighteen off the leaders, while OPC Team Phoenix had held fourth a further ten behind. Elsewhere, AMG-Mercedes had held the lead in the Manufacturers' Championship after the fourth race, the Stuttgart squad thirteen clear of Audi in second.

Mattias Ekström was next up in second having lost the lead at the Norisring, three off the lead, while Gary Paffett had moved into a clear third place, but was still seventeen off the lead. Bernd Schneider and Martin Tomczyk then completed the half-time top five, with fourteen of the twenty-one drivers having scored in the first half of the campaign.
Vodafone/DC Bank AMG-Mercedes had moved back into the lead of the Teams' Championship as the season reached its summer break, having moved onto 58 points for the season.
