2004 | 2006 |
The 2005 DTM Season, formally known as the 2005 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, was the sixth season of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship since the Series' reformation in 2000, and nineteenth season of top-end German touring car racing.[1] The season would see Mattias Ekström and Gary Paffett duel for the title for a second successive campaign.[1]
Ekström would start the season as the reigning DTM Champion, after claiming four wins in 2004.[2] Audi would start the campaign as the reigning Manufacturers' Champions, while Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline opened the Championship as the reigning Teams' Champions.[2]
The calendar featured several revisions from 2004, with races in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium and Istanbul Park in Turkey added to the Championship tour.[1] Their inclusion resulted in the removal of Adria, Italy from the calendar, while the non-Championship race in Shanghai was also removed.[1]
The season opened with victory for ex-Formula One racer Jean Alesi claiming victory in Hockenheim, before Paffett claimed pole and victory at the second race in Lausitz.[3] Rookie Mika Häkkinen then claimed a maiden victory at Spa, before Ekström claimed his first win at Brno.[4]
Paffett claimed two more victories at the following two rounds at Oschersleben and Norisring, before Ekström claimed his second win at the Nürburgring.[5] The pair then exchanged victories at Zandvoort (Paffett), Lausitz (Ekström) and Istanbul Park (Paffett), leaving them nine points apart at the season finale in Hockenheim.[6]
The finale saw Paffett claim the Championship with third place, leaving him on 84 points for the campaign, while Ekström finished on 71.[7] Elsewhere, Paffett's HWA Team would claim the Teams' Championship, while Mercedes triumphed in the Manufacturers' Championship.[8]
Elsewhere, the 2005 season would see victories for Alesi, Häkkinen and Bernd Schneider, although they would all be beaten in the Championship by Tom Kristensen.[8] The season would also be significant as the debut season for future Champion Bruno Spengler, as well as Häkkinen and Jamie Green, all of whom were employed be Mercedes.[9] It would also serve as the last campaign for Opel as a manufacturer, as well as 2002 Champion Laurent Aïello and Manuel Reuter as a result of Opel pulling out.[10]
Background[]
Calendar[]
The DTM calendar for 2005 would see an increase in the number of Championship rounds, with eleven events scheduled, although there would be no non-Championship races.[1] There would also be some editing to the calendar, with the addition of rounds at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, and Istanbul Park in Turkey.[1] They replaced the rounds in Estoril and Adria, while a second race at the Lausitzring was also added.[1]
The season would open with a trip to the Hockenheimring on 17 April, before the first battle of the Lausitzring on 1 May.[1] Spa would host its first DTM race on 15 May, before the series hopped across Europe to Brno in the Czech Republic for the fourth race of the season on 5 June.[1] Oschersleben then held its race on 26 June, before the Norisring hosted the DTM on 17 July to lead into a truncated summer-break.[1]
The season would resume on the 7 August at the Nürburgring, before stopping over in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, on 28 August.[1] The Lausitzring then hosted its second race on 18 September, before a trip to the South-Eastern tip of Europe to Istanbul Park, Turkey, on 2 October.[1] The season would then conclude back at the Hockenheimring on 23 October.[1]

Regulations[]
There were several minor tweaks to the DTM rulebook for the 2005 season, mainly concerning success ballast and cost saving measures.[30] Otherwise the rulebook would remain stable, retaining the use of saloon based silhouette racing cars, the same 4.0 litre V8 engines, and the same sporting ruleset used in 2004 including Super Pole qualifying.[30]
Technical[]
The main change for the 2005 season was the decision by ITR e.V. and the DMSB to introduce success ballast to the series, in a bid to better balance the field.[30] There would also be a complete ban of cars built before the 2004 season, as well as a guarantee that teams could use 2005 spec cars into the 2006 and 2007 seasons to decrease costs.[30] There was also a provision for a fourth manufacturer to enter the Series, although plans for that fell apart when MG pulled out of the programme being developed by Zytek Engineering.[31]
Success Supplement[]
The 2005 season saw the DTM implement new minimum weights for the series, as well as a success ballast system to balance the field between rounds.[30] For 2005 all 2005-spec cars would have to reach a minimum weight of 1,050 kg, including the driver, while 2004-spec cars would only have to weight 1,035 kg including their pilot.[30] These weights would be set for future seasons too, with brand new cars each season racing at the 1,050 kg limit, while older cars were to race at 1,035 kg.[30]
However, there would be changes between races, with the addition of success ballast for the winning manufacturer after each race.[30] Each time a manufacturer won a race, all of their cars would take on an additional 10 kg of ballast, while the third placed manufacturer in each round would lose 10 kg.[30]
