The 2005 Hockenheim Opening Race, formally known as the DTM Hockenheim Opening 2005, was the opening round of the 2005 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 17 April 2005.[1] The race would see Jean Alesi open the campaign with victory, having opted for a contrarian pitstop strategy.[2]
There had been some shuffling among the teams and manufacturers over the winter, with Team Rosberg having withdrawn from the series, along with Euroteam.[3] However, while Opel would see their entry reduced to just four cars, Mercedes would retain their eight car presence with the addition of Mücke Motorsport to their roster, while Joest Racing secured two more Audis to bring the Ingolstadt marque's presence up to eight cars as well.[4]
Elsewhere, there had also been some changes on the driver front, although only one of the seats in the top Audi/Mercedes teams had changed hands.[5] Indeed, Audi would bring in endurance ace Allan McNish to their secondary ABT Sportsline entry, partnering Tom Kristensen, while Mercedes brought in a huge name in the form of two-time Formula One World Champion Mika Häkkinen to partner DTM ace Bernd Schneider.[6]
Into the opening round itself and qualifying would see defending Champion Mattias Ekström, adorned with #1 as his race number, open the season with pole position, beating Paffett by 0.032s.[7] Green put in an impressive display to claim third for his debut race ahead of Marcel Fässler, the leading Opel pilot in the field, while Alesi secured fifth ahead of the debuting Spengler.[7]
The start of the race saw Paffett dart into the lead as the lights went out, blasting past Ekström into the first corner.[8] They would make it through the first corner unhindered, although behind there would be an accident as the rest of the field thundered into the right-hand flick.[8]
The trigger was Manuel Reuter, who locked up his car and ran wide before spinning, causing the sister car of Laurent Aïello to spin as well.[8] Aïello was subsequently collected by Tom Kristensen and Rinaldo Capello, with all three cars ending up badly damaged just a few yards from the pit exit.[8]
The Safety Car was scrambled to allow the incident to be clear, staying out for five laps before Paffett made another early break at the restart to re-establish the lead.[8] Ekström gave chase in second ahead of Fässler and Jamie Green, the best of the debutantes, while Häkkinen made his first stop from the back of the field.[8]
Ekström would briefly get back on terms with Paffett on the restart lap before both darted in to serve their stops, with Ekström scrambling ahead in the pitstop exchange.[8] Alesi, meanwhile, would move to the head of the five having opted against stopping, with the Frenchman opting for a long first stint.[8]
Paffett and Ekström would get delayed in traffic after their stops, allowing Alesi and Schneider to gain the upper hand and move ahead, Alesi having been the last driver to complete his first stop.[8] Indeed, the second round of stops would see Alesi gain even more ground and retain the lead, while Schneider and Paffett were left to fight for second.[8]
With that the race was run, with Alesi able to control the final laps to secure his first win in eighteen months ahead of Paffett.[8] Schneider completed the podium ahead of Christian Abt, who had been another to make a later stop in the opening phase of the race, while Ekström slipped to fifth ahead of Green.[8] Stefan Mücke trailed them in seventh, while Häkkinen's transition to touring cars had seen him claim a single point with eighth on his debut.[8]

Standings[]
Victory on the opening day of the campaign had, unsurprisingly, left Jean Alesi atop the Championship, the Frenchman having outscored Gary Paffett by two points courtesy of his fifth DTM triumph. Paffett himself had a two point margin over Bernd Schneider in third, while the former Champion had a point in hand over Christian Abt. Also on the board after the first race were defending Champion Mattias Ekström, debutante Jamie Green, Stefan Mücke and ex-Formula One ace Mika Häkkinen.
In the Teams' Championship the de jure first HWA Team entry, sponsored by DaimlerChrysler Bank, led the charge, having claimed a maximum score of eighteen points after Alesi and Paffett's one-two. Their secondary entry carrying Vodafone and Sport Edition sponsorship occupied second, eleven behind, while Audi Team Joest Racing led the anti-HWA charge from third. In the Manufacturers' Championship AMG-Mercedes unsurprisingly led the way after locking out the podium, 21 ahead of Audi, while Opel had failed to score.
