The 2005 Nürburgring Race, otherwise known as the DTM Nürburg 2005, was the seventh race of the 2005 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged on the Nürburgring Sprint Circuit in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on 7 August 2005.[1] The race would see Mattias Ekström battle to victory, albeit after race leader Gary Paffett was punished for a mistake leaving the pitlane in tricky conditions.[2]
Qualifying was staged in completely dry conditions, and would see Championship leader Paffett sweep to pole position by a quarter of a second.[3] Mika Häkkinen was his closest challenger in second ahead of Ekström, while Bernd Schneider secured fourth ahead of the best Opel pilot in the form of Laurent Aïello.[3]
Rain before the race ensured that the circuit was damp for the start, with the organisers opting to start the race behind the Safety Car.[4] After one lap behind the SC the field were released with Paffett initially breaking clear, only for Häkkinen to make an ambitious lunge on the brakes around the outside of the first corner, but to no avail.[4]
That lunge allowed Paffett to establish an early lead, while Häkkinen had to work to keep Ekström at bay to hold third.[4] Schneider was next up and would go on the offensive early on the third tour, almost managing to force his way past Ekström, while Aïello continued to head the Opel charge having fended off a lunge from Tom Kristensen.[4]
The circuit would rapidly dry once the field hit true race pace, aided by very high air temperatures that saw steam coming off the wetter parts of the circuit.[4] Yet, the order at the head of the field would remain unchanged, with Schneider still harrying Ekström as their first stops loomed.[4]
On lap ten Ekström led Schneider into the pits, with both drivers scrambling out onto the still wet pitlane with slick tyres, with Schneider handling the wet surface better and slithering out ahead.[4] However, Ekström would manage to drive right around the outside of Schneider on their out-laps to reclaim third, as Häkkinen and Paffett came in on the following two laps for their stops.[4]
Ekström gambled on a quick-fire second stop to try and undercut Häkkinen, while Paffett and the Finn remained out for a few more laps.[4] Paffett duly emerged still ahead of the Swede, although in the scramble to rejoin the Brit would misjudge his exit from the pitlane and cross the white line at pit-out, earning himself an instant penalty.[4]
Häkkinen, meanwhile, would slip behind Ekström during their pit-exchange, although the Finn would go on the offensive to try and regain the position.[4] Unfortunately for Häkkinen his lunge at the first corner would be made far too late on the brakes, with the #8 AMG-Mercedes duly sailing past the #1 Audi and into the run-off area.[4]
Once Paffett served his penalty the race was over, with Ekström cruising to victory ahead of Kristensen, who was able to get ahead of Häkkinen courtesy of the Finn's off.[4] Häkkinen himself would surrender third to a charging Paffett on the final tour, finishing fourth behind the Brit, while Schneider was a lonely fifth.[4] Allan McNish was next up ahead of Jean Alesi, while Jamie Green secured the final point in eighth.[4]
Background[]
The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters annual trek to the Eifel Mountains and the Nürburgring in 2005 would be made in early August, which would serve as the seventh race of the campaign.[1] The Series would again use the Sprint layout of the Grand Prix Strecke, with 112,000 tickets sold for the weekend.[1] The entry list was also unchanged for the seventh race in succession, with news of updated rules for the 2006 season being announced during the trip to the Nürburgring the main pre-race interest.[5]
Cost Controls[]
The updated ruleset for the DMSB DTM Championship for the 2006 campaign would be largely focused on cost-cutting, with limitations made on both winter development and race operations to reduce budgets.[5] In terms of development, the DMSB announced that manufacturers would have to retain the use of their current, 2005-spec, aerodynamic kits, although face-lift details to match their road car equivalents would be allowed.[5] The internal structures and engines would also be retained for the 2006 season, further reducing development costs, while the minimum weight for 2006-spec cars was set at 1,050 kg, while 2005-spec cars were to race at 1,035 kg.[5]
Elsewhere, the DMSB placed a limit of seven mechanics that could work on a car during a pitstop, a step that would reduce the number of operational staff required and hence keep budgets down.[5] There would also be a complete ban on electronic management of the pit stop bays, as manufacturer teams had pushed a fair amount of funding at automatic systems.[5] Furthermore, each car's tyre allocation from Dunlop would also be reduced from 36 tyres to 28 tyres (the equivalent of nine full sets down to seven), while the success ballast formula from 2005 would be retained.[5]
Norisring Nullifier[]
In terms of success ballast for the trip to the Nürburgring there would be no changes to the allocation, with AMG-Mercedes remaining at the heaviest weight, while Opel continued to run at the lowest.[6]
Outlined below are the success ballast allocations for the 2005 Nürburgring Race:
2005 Nürburgring Race Success Ballast | ||

Manufacturer | Year | Weight |
AMG-Mercedes | 2004 | 1,055 kg (—) |
2005 | 1,070 kg (—) | |
Audi | 2004 | 1,045 kg (—) |
2005 | 1,060 kg (—) | |
Opel | 2004 | 1,015 kg (—) |
2005 | 1,030 kg (—) |
Paffett's Push[]
A third victory of the campaign in Nuremberg had been enough to restore Gary Paffett back to the top of the Championship, the Brit having moved onto 44 points for the season. Mattias Ekström had slipped back to second, three off the lead, while Tom Kristensen had retained third, but fell sixteen off the lead. Mika Häkkinen and Jean Alesi had held station too, both having remained on seventeen points, while Christian Abt had moved into sixth.
DaimlerChrysler Bank AMG-Mercedes continued to lead the Teams' Championship after their fourth win of the season at the Norisring, with the lead HWA squad having moved onto 61 points. Audi Team Abt Sportsline remained in second, thirteen off the lead having kept pace with HWA, while their sister squad Audi Team Abt had lost ground in third. In the Manufacturers' Championship Audi had moved into the lead of the Championship for the first time in almost two years, having opened out a six point lead over AMG-Mercedes.

Milestones[]
- Ninth win for Mattias Ekström.
- 25th victory for ABT Sportsline as an entrant.
- Audi secured their 25th win as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
A second win of the season had moved Mattias Ekström back to the top of the Championship, and by the same margin by which he had led the 2005 title hunt leaving Oschersleben. Indeed, former leader Gary Paffett had slipped back by a point once again, while Tom Kristensen had slipped fifteen off the lead in third. Mika Häkkinen had added to his tally for the first time in three races to move onto 22 points for the season, while Jean Alesi completed the top five.
In the Teams' Championship DC Bank AMG-Mercedes had retained the initiative atop the table, although their advantage had been reduced to eleven points. Audi Team Abt Sportsline were still their closest challengers in second, while Audi Team Abt completed the top three. Elsewhere, Audi had increased their lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, having moved nine ahead of AMG-Mercedes.
