DTM Oschersleben 2005, otherwise known as the 2005 Oschersleben Race, was the fifth round of the 2005 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in Oschersleben, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, on 26 June 2005.[1] The race would see Gary Paffett sweep to victory, benefitting from swift work from his pitcrew in both of his compulsory stops.[2]
Qualifying had seen Tom Kristensen, fresh from his record seventh 24 Hours of Le Mans victory, secure his maiden DTM pole position as Super Pole was cancelled amid an early summer storm.[3] Martin Tomczyk would share the front row with the Dane, albeit over three quarters of a second back, while Gary Paffett and Jamie Green would share the second row for AMG-Mercedes.[3]
The start of the race saw Kristensen make a miserable start, narrowly avoiding stalling and just managing to avoid a huge rear accident.[4] Tomczyk was hence expecting to secure the lead, only for a barnstorming start from Green seeing the #21 Mercedes charge into the lead into the first corner.[4]
Green duly set about building a lead on the opening tour, with Tomczyk instead having to put up a furious defence from Paffett.[4] Indeed, Paffett's pressure would continue on to the second lap, with the #3 Mercedes duly squeezing down the inside of the #2 Audi early on the second lap to claim second.[4]
The early laps saw Green, Paffett and Tomczyk break clear, with fourth placed Laurent Aïello not only fighting with Mattias Ekström, but also having to put up with a loose right-hand door.[4] Kristensen, meanwhile, had settled into tenth in the field, while Mika Häkkinen remained rooted at the back of the field, and would lose a lot of time when his pitcrew made a mess of his pitstop.[4]
Häkkinen's race was over a couple of laps later, with the Finn making a mistake and running off circuit, before hitting a bank of mud off-track that pushed the car briefly into the air, and ripped the floor apart.[4] Kristensen, meanwhile, would make impressive progress after an early stop of his own, breaking back into the top ten as Häkkinen stopped on track.[4]
Out front, meanwhile, Green and Paffett would remain just a second apart through to their first round of stops, before both stopped on lap eleven.[4] The pit battle between HWA and Persson Motorsport would end up in Paffett getting out faster, although the pair would run side-by-side down the pitlane.[4] At pit-out, with the exit narrower than the pitlane itself, Green ceded position to his title challenging stablemate.[4]
With that Paffett was away, while Green would slowly slip back into the sights of Tomczyk, just as the German racer let teammate Ekström past without a fight.[4] The Green-Ekström fight would last until shortly before their second stops, with Ekström finally forcing his way through with thirteen laps to go.[4]
Out front, meanwhile, Paffett would cruise through the closing stages to secure his second victory of the campaign, with Ekström finishing second to maintain his Championship lead.[4] Green secured his maiden podium finish in third ahead of Bernd Schneider, who had quietly risen up the field, while Kristensen recovered to fifth ahead of teammate Allan McNish.[4] Aïello was next up after his door was slammed shut during his first stop, while Marcel Fässler rounded out the scorers.[4]
Background[]
Three weeks since the previous round in Brno the 2005 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters arrived at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben for its fifth round.[1] The Saxon circuit was unchanged from the DTM's previous visit in 2004, with the entry list likewise unaltered.[1] There had, however, been some more silverware added to the DTM paddock, after Tom Kristensen claimed his record seventh win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside JJ Lehto and Marco Werner.[1]
Mercedes' Motivation[]
Ahead of the trip to Oschersleben the success ballast had been reallocated based on the results of the previous round in Brno, with Audi having finally gained weight.[5] Indeed, after their first win of the season the Audi octet had all had 10 kg added to their cars for the fifth weekend of the season, while AMG-Mercedes had lost 10 kg, meaning their cars would be equal in weight with Audi's.[5] Opel, meanwhile, would remain at the minimum weight, having finished second to Audi in the Czech Republic.[5]
Outlined below are the success ballast allocations for the 2005 Oschersleben Race:
2005 Oschersleben Race Success Ballast | ||
---|---|---|
Manufacturer | Year | Weight |
AMG-Mercedes | 2004 | 1,045 kg (▼ 10 kg) |
2005 | 1,060 kg (▼ 10 kg) | |
Audi | 2004 | 1,045 kg (▲ 10 kg) |
2005 | 1,060 kg (▲ 10 kg) | |
Opel | 2004 | 1,015 kg (—) |
2005 | 1,030 kg (—) |
Ekström's Endeavour[]
A first victory of the campaign for Mattias Ekström was enough to propel the reigning Champion back to the top of the Championship, the Swede having opened out a three point lead. Gary Paffett, former leader, had slipped to second after two mistakes in Brno, while Tom Kristensen was up to third after a third straight podium finish. Mika Häkkinen upped the Scandinavian contingent in the top five with fourth, remaining ahead of Jean Alesi, while Christian Abt was the lead German pilot in the early standings in sixth.
The Teams' Championship continued to be headed by DC Bank AMG-Mercedes after the fourth round, although their early lead had been reduced by a non-AMG-Mercedes squad for the first time. Indeed, the two Audi Team Abt entries had moved up to challenge HWA's lead effort, although the Sportsline squad were still eleven points off the leaders in second. In the Manufacturers' Championship Audi had heavily outscored AMG-Mercedes for the first time in 2005, and hence had moved to within four points of the Stuttgart marque.

Milestones[]
- Maiden pole position for Tom Kristensen.
- Fifth win for Gary Paffett.
- HWA Team claimed their 46th win as an entrant.

Standings[]
Mattias Ekström had retained the lead in the Championship after his second, second place finish of the campaign, with those eight points just enough for him to retain the initiative. Indeed, race winner Gary Paffett, the first repeat winner of 2005, had closed to within a point of the defending Champion, while Tom Kristensen eight off in third. Mika Häkkinen, meanwhile, had lost a fair amount of ground in fourth ahead of Jean Alesi, while Bernd Schneider had moved up to be the best placed German driver, albeit down in seventh.
In the Teams' Championship DC Bank AMG-Mercedes had inched away atop the table, the German squad having moved onto 51 points for the season. Audi Team Abt Sportsline had remained as their closest challengers, but slipped thirteen behind, while their sister squad Audi Team Abt were in third, twenty off the lead. In the Manufacturers' Championship AMG-Mercedes retained the lead, and had increased their advantage to ten points.
