The 2006 DTM Season, otherwise known as the 2006 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, was the seventh edition of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship since the Series' reformation in 2000, and twentieth year of top level German touring car racing.[1] The season would see Bernd Schneider secure his fourth and final DTM title, after fending off a season long challenge from young pretender Bruno Spengler.[2]
Gary Paffett was the reigning DTM Champion after defeating Mattias Ekström in 2005, although the Brit opted against defending his title by taking a test/reserve role in Formula One.[3] However, his former employers HWA Team would defend their title as the Teams' Champions, while AMG-Mercedes were the reigning Manufacturers' Champions.[4]
However, the withdrawal of Opel from the Series had caused some major shuffles to the DTM paddock, with the Manufacturers' Championship removed as only Mercedes and Audi remained.[5] As a result both Audi and Mercedes would increase their involvement, with Mercedes prompting their two customer teams, Persson Motorsport and Mücke Motorsport to purchase third cars, while Audi sold cars to semi-privateers Phoenix Racing, Team Rosberg GmbH and Kolles Racing.[6]
The season would be composed of ten rounds, although there were more modifications to the calendar, with almost all of the non-German events replaced from 2005.[1] Indeed, in place of trips to Brno, Czech Republic, Istanbul Park, Turkey, and Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, the 2006 tour would head to Brands Hatch, UK, Barcelona, Span, and Le Mans, France, in addition to six races in Germany.[1]
The season opened with Schneider taking victory at Hockenheim, before taking a second victory at the Lausitzring.[7] Tom Kristensen and Ekström were next up to claim victories, before Bruno Spengler claimed two on the trot at the Norisring and Nürburgring.[8]
Kristensen and Martin Tomczyk would claim victory at the next pair of races, while a run of five straight podium finishes for Schneider left him on the verge of the title at Le Mans.[9] The German racer duly finished fifth as Spengler won to claim the Championship, with Spengler going on to claim a fourth win of the season at the Season Finale.[2]
Elsewhere, HWA Team retained the Teams' Championship, beating the second HWA entry by fourteen points, while Audi Sport Team Abt claimed third.[2] The season would also see Vanina Ickx and Susie Stoddart join the Series, becoming the first women to race in the DTM since its revival.[10]
Background[]
Calendar[]
The 2006 DTM season would feature ten rounds, although there were several revisions to the schedule compared the 2005.[1] Indeed, all of the rounds outside of Germany bar the annual trip to Circuit Park Zandvoort were replaced, with Brands Hatch, UK, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain and the Bugatti Circuit in France all hosting their first DTM races.[1] In terms of the German rounds the second race at the Lausitzring was dropped, leaving six German meetings, as well as a special pre-season event named the Präsentation Düsseldorf.[1]
The season would officially start with the Präsentation Düsseldorf on 26 March, before the racing got underway at the Hockenheimring on 9 April.[1] The second round of the season would see the field battle around the Lausitzring on 30 April, before heading across to Oschersleben on 21 May.[1] Brands Hatch in the UK would then make its DTM debut on 2 July, before the annual battle on the streets of Nuremberg and the Norisring was scheduled for the 23 July.[1]
After the summer break the series would reconvene at the Nürburgring on 20 August, before hopping over to the Netherlands and Zandvoort on 3 September.[1] The 24 September would then see the DTM stage its first race in Spain at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, followed by a trip to the Bugatti Circuit in Le Mans, France.[1] The season would then conclude on the 29 October, with the Hockenheimring once again closing the season.[1]
