Season Guide | ||
2006 | 2008 |
The 2007 DTM Season, otherwise known as the 2007 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, was the eighth edition of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, and the twenty-first season of premier German touring car racing.[1] The season would see Mattias Ekström, Bruno Spengler and Martin Tomczyk battle for the title, which would last to the final day of the campaign.[2]
Bernd Schneider would open the season as the reigning Champion after claiming the 2006 title, as Mercedes shuffled their drivers to include a returning 2005 Champion in the form of Gary Paffett.[3] Elsewhere, HWA Team would start the season as the reigning Teams' Champions, with both Audi and Mercedes supplying ten cars apiece for the second successive season.
There were some revisions to the calendar for the 2007 season, with the race at Le Mans replaced by a trip to Mugello in Italy.[1] There was also a shuffle to the order and dates of several events, although all of the German based rounds from the 2006 calendar were retained.[1]
The season would open with a spectacular accident at the Hockenheimring, with Tom Kristensen and Alexandre Prémat both forced to sit out the following round.[4] On track, meanwhile, Ekström would collect the first victory on offer for the season, before Paffett claimed the first win of his return at Oschersleben.[5]
There was controversy at the Lausitzring as the Safety Car picked up the wrong driver, resulting in half-points being awarded as Mika Häkkinen claimed victory.[6] Schneider then claimed his first win of the campaign at Brands Hatch, while Spengler secured his first win at the Norisring.[7]
Häkkinen's second win came at Mugello, before some questionable shuffling from Audi at the Zandvoort saw Tomczyk claim a win.[8] The German racer duly claimed a second victory at the following race in Nürburgring, before Häkkinen and Daniel la Rosa were accused of deliberately crashing into Tomczyk and Ekström as Jamie Green swept to victory in Barcelona.[9]
The season finale at the Hockenheimring saw Ekström head the Championship by two points from Spengler, while Tomczyk was a further two behind.[2] Ultimately, Ekström secured the crown with third place ahead of Spengler as Green swept to victory, beating the Canadian by 50 points to 47.[2] That result also ensured that Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline were awarded the Teams' Championship crown.
Away from the title hunt the season would be significant as the first for 2010 Champion Paul di Resta, as well as 2013 Champion Mike Rockenfeller.[10] Furthermore, it was also the last campaign for Häkkinen, who formally retired from all premier racing, including Formula One, at the end of the season.[11]
Background[]
Calendar[]
There were several changes to the calendar for the 2007 season, with the major revision being a change from the Bugatti Circuit in Le Mans, France, to the Mugello Circuit in Mugello, Italy.[1] Furthermore, the dates of several rounds had been changed, with the battle of Nuremburg held earlier on mid-June, while the trip to Zandvoort would herald the summer break.[1]
The season would, however, open in familiar fashion at the Hockenheimring on 22 April, after the Präsentation Düsseldorf on 15 April officially started the series.[1] The annual trip to Oschersleben would follow on 6 May, before the Lausitzring held the third round on 20 May.[1] Brands Hatch would then host its second DTM race on 10 June, followed by the Norisring on 24 June.[1]
Mugello would host its maiden DTM race on 15 July, before the trip to Zandvoort on 29 July.[1] The season would then resume n 2 September at the Nürburgring, followed three weeks later by a trip to Barcelona on 23 September.[1] The season would then come to its conclusion back at Hockenheim, with the Champion crowned on 14 October.[1]
