The 2008 DTM Season, otherwise known as the 2008 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, was the ninth edition of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, and the twenty-second season of top-end German touring car racing.[1] The season would see Timo Scheider battle with Paul di Resta and Mattias Ekström for the Championship title, as veteran campaigner and four-time Champion Bernd Schneider called time on his DTM career.[2]
Ekström was the reigning DTM Champion after claiming the title in 2007, and would opt to defend his title in 2008.[3] His employers Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline would open the season as the reigning Teams' Champions, with Audi and Mercedes the only manufacturers in 2008.[4]
There was one major change to the calendar, with the addition of an eleventh round as the series returned to the Bugatti Circuit in Le Mans.[1] Otherwise, the calendar was similar to the 2007 schedule barring some date changes, with the trip to Brands Hatch pushed back to late August.[1]
Ekström would open his title defence with victory on the opening day at Hockenheim, after elbowing his way past pole sitter Scheider.[5] Scheider duly claimed his first victory of the season at Oschersleben, before Jamie Green collected his first win of the season at Mugello.[6]
di Resta was the next driver to claim a win at the Lausitzring, before Green became the season's first repeat winner at the Norisring.[7] Ekström then claimed his second win at 2008 Zandvoort Race, before Schneider claimed his final DTM victory at the Nürburgring.[8]
Scheider claimed his second win of the season at Brands Hatch, before di Resta claimed his second victory at Barcelona.[9] Victory for Ekström at Le Mans then setup a duel for the title at the season finale in Hockenheim, with Scheider ultimately claiming Championship title with victory at the final race.[2]
Scheider was declared as the Champion by four points from di Resta, whom had claimed five podiums in the final five races to announce himself as a future Champion.[2] In the Teams' Championship, meanwhile, it was di Resta's employers HWA Team whom emerged victorious for Mercedes, beating Audi's Team Abt outfit by seven points.[2]
The 2008 DTM Season would see six of the nineteen drivers claim victory across the season, with Audi claiming six wins to Mercedes' five.[2] Furthermore, aside from Schneider, the season would be the last for former title pretender Christijan Albers, as well as the first for ex-Formula One driver Ralf Schumacher.[10]
Background[]
Calendar[]
The DTM schedule for 2008 was based heavily on the 2007 schedule, albeit with an additional round added to increase the Championship to eleven rounds.[1] The addition would mark the Series' return to Le Mans and the Bugatti Circuit, with the only other changes being a general shuffle of dates.[1]
The season would open on 6 April with the third edition of the Präsentation Düsseldorf, before the first racing round of the season at the Hockenheimring on 13 April.[1] A week later and the field would arrive in Oschersleben, before Mugello held its DTM race on 4 May.[1] The 18 May would see the field arrive at the Lausitzring for its annual race, before the annual trip to Nuremburg and the Norisring on 29 June.[1]
Zandvoort would then host its annual DTM race on 13 July, with the Nürburgring following on 27 July.[1] After a month long summer break the field would reconvene at Brands Hatch on 31 August, before heading over to Spain and Barcelona on 21 September.[1] Le Mans then made its DTM return on 5 October, before the season came to a conclusion on 26 October back at the Hockenheimring.[1]
