The 2009 DTM Season, otherwise known as the 2009 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, was the tenth season of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, and twenty-third year of top-level German touring car racing.[1] The season would see Timo Scheider become the first driver since 2001 to defend his Championship crown, defeating 2005 Champion Gary Paffett.[1]
Indeed, Scheider would start the 2009 season as the reigning Champion, having defeated Paul di Resta at the finale for 2008 by four points.[2] However, it was HWA Team representing Mercedes that would enter 2009 as the Teams' Champions, with ABT Sportsline heading the factory Audi charge.[2]
A ten round Championship calendar was created for the 2009 campaign, with the removal of Mugello from the schedule the major change.[1] Elsewhere, it was announced that the Dijon-Prenois circuit would take over from the Bugatti Circuit to host the French DTM round, while the annual race around the Norisring was to be staged earlier in the season.[1]
The season opened with a victory for Tom Kristensen at the Hockenheimring, before Paffett claimed his first win of the campaign at Lausitz.[3] Paffett would claim his second win of the season at Zandvoort, after a win for Jamie Green at the Norisring, with Scheider getting disqualified.[4]
Scheider bounced back from his disqualification at Oschersleben, claiming his first win of the campaign.[5] He duly claimed two straight podium finishes at the Nürburgring and Brands Hatch, before claiming his second win, and a commanding Championship lead, at Barcelona.[6]
Indeed, despite Paffett claiming two more victories at the final two rounds in Dijon-Prenois and Hockenheim, Scheider had enough in hand to claim the title.[7] He duly claimed the title by five points from the Brit, while Paffett's HWA Team would claim the honours in the Teams' Championship at the final round.[7]
Away from the Championship fight, there would be wins for Martin Tomczyk and Paul di Resta, bringing the total number of victors to six.[7] Elsewhere, 2009 would be the final campaign for Danish legend Kristensen, as well as Mathias Lauda, the son of Niki Lauda, while Kolles Racing left the Series at the end of the season.[8]
Background[]
Calendar[]
The 2009 calendar would feature some major revisions compared to 2008, with a lot of dates modified, one round dropped and one venue changed.[1] Indeed, the trip to Mugello had been removed, while the Bugatti Circuit in Le Mans was replaced by Dijon-Prenois near Dijon.[1] Elsewhere, the dates for almost all events would be moved to avoid clashes with Formula One, with the summer break completely removed.[1]
The season would open later than normal in mid-May, with the familiar sight of the Hockenheimring greeting the series on 17 May.[1] The Lausitzring was next up on 31 May, before the Norisring held its annual DTM battle on 28 June.[1] The sand dunes of Zandvoort were next up on 19 July, before Oschersleben held its race on 2 August.[1]
The Nürburgring was the next circuit on the schedule on 16 August, followed by Brands Hatch on 6 September.[1] The next round was staged at Barcelona on 20 September, before Dijon-Prenois made its debut on 11 October.[1] The season then came to a conclusion on 25 October at the Hockenheimring.[1]

Regulations[]
There were a series of minor modifications to the rulebooks for the 2009 season, with weights changed for the different year-specifications of each car.
Technical[]
For the 2009 season all new 2009-spec cars would compete with an increased minimum weight on 1,050 kg, while the 2008 cars weighed in at 1,030 kg.[29] Furthermore, 2007-spec cars would have a minimum weight of 1,010 kg, with the aim to allow better balance between the manufacturer backed teams with new equipment, and the privateers campaigning older cars.[29]
Sporting[]
Qualifying received an overhaul for the 2009 season, with a four-stage knockout format adopted and modified from Formula One.[30] The first session would see all twenty drivers compete, before the slowest four were removed.[30] The process would then repeat twice, before the top eight progressed to a Super Pole shootout to set the top eight places on the grid.[30]
The full points scoring system for the 2009 DTM campaign is outlined below:
