The 2010 DTM Season, formally known as the 2010 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, was the eleventh season of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, and twenty-fourth season of top-level German touring car racing.[1] The season would see British drivers Paul di Resta and Gary Paffett battle for the title with Canadian ace Bruno Spengler.[2]
The season would see a major shake-up to the calendar, featuring the first non-European Championship round since the series was reformed.[1] Indeed, amongst a move to the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia and a return to the Adria International Raceway, the DTM would head to the Shanghai Street Circuit in China, which would serve at the final race of the campaign.[1]
Timo Scheider would open the season as the reigning DTM Champion, bidding to become the first driver to claim three DTM titles in a row.[3] Elsewhere, Mercedes factory squad HWA Team would open the season as the reigning Teams' Champions, with Mercedes and Audi remaining the only manufacturers involved in the Series.[3]
The season would open in familiar surroundings at the Hockenheimring, with Paffett claiming first blood with victory ahead of Spengler.[4] Mattias Ekström then claimed victory in the Series' first trip to Valencia in Span, before Spengler secured his first win at the Lausitzring.[5]
Spengler became the season's first repeat winner with victory at the Nürburgring, before Paffett claimed his second win at Zandvoort.[6] Paul di Resta then scored three wins on the trot at Brands Hatch, Oschersleben and Hockenheim to announce himself as a title pretender, before the two flyaway races to complete the season.[7]
Scheider claimed victory at Adria with Paffett in second, setting up a three-way truel for the title with Spengler holding a three point lead over di Resta, while Paffett trailed by nine.[8] Paffett won the finale in Shanghai, although second for di Resta, combined with a non-score for Spengler, left the Scot as Champion with 71 points to his name.[2]
Outside of the Championship fight there would be wins for Jamie Green as well as Ekström and Scheider, with HWA Team claiming the Teams' title.[9] The season would also see ex-Formula One driver David Coulthard make his DTM debut, as well as China's first 24 Hours of Le Mans competitor Cheng Congfu.[10]
Background[]
Calendar[]
There were some major changes to the calendar as the DTM celebrated its tenth anniversary since its reformation in 2000, with the addition of the Series' first non-European round, as well as a major change to the order.[1] Indeed, shortly before the start of the season it was announced that the season would conclude at a modified Shanghai Street Circuit, returning for the first time since it held a non-Championship round in 2004.[11] Midway through the season it was also announced that there would be an additional round at Adria in Italy, bringing the calendar to eleven rounds.[12]
The season would open in familiar sights at the Hockenheimring on 25 April, before the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valenica hosted its first race on 23 May.[1] A trip to the Lausitzring would follow on 6 June, before the Norisring held its race on 4 July.[1] That was followed by a month long summer break, before the season resumed on 8 August at the Nürburgring.[1]
The Circuit Park Zandvoort was the sixth round on the schedule on 22 August, before the annual visit to Brands Hatch on 5 September.[1] Oschersleben was next up on 19 September, before the second trip to the Hockenheimring on 17 October.[1] The return to Adria was then scheduled for the 31 October, before the season was to conclude on 28 November in Shanghai.[11]
