2010 | 2012 |
The 2011 DTM Season, otherwise known as the 2011 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, was the twelfth season of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, and twenty-fifth competitive year of top-tier German touring car racing.[1] The season would see Audi drivers Martin Tomczyk claim the crown at a canter, as early leader Bruno Spengler faltered during the second-half of the season.[2]
An initial twelve round calendar was announced for the 2011 season, although that was reduced to eleven, including a non-Championship round, as the Chinese motorsports association cancelled the Shanghai race.[3] Elsewhere, the non-Championship round would see the field battle around the Olympiastadion München in Munich, while the series would return to Spielberg in Austria, which replaced the trip to Adria, Italy.[1]
Paul di Resta was the reigning DTM Champion after a triumphant campaign in 2010, although he opted no to defend his title by accepting a seat in Formula One.[4] However, his former employers HWA Team would defend their title in the Teams' Championship, and would remain as the factory team for Mercedes in the DTM.[5]
Spengler was the first driver to claim victory in 2011, winning the 2011 Hockenheim Opening Race in dominant fashion.[6] Martin Tomczyk then claimed two victories on the trot at the Red Bull Ring and Lausitzring, before Spengler reclaimed the Championship lead in Nuremberg.[7]
Spengler's season deteriorated after that, claiming only one more podium finish at the Nürburgring as Mattias Ekström stormed to victory.[8] Tomczyk, meanwhile, would claim his third win of the season at Brands Hatch, while Ekström claimed two more at Oschersleben and Valencia.[9]
Ultimately it was the Valencia race that settled the Championship, with Tomczyk claiming the title with a race to spare, having ended the season with a run of four straight podium finishes.[2] Ekström, meanwhile, would beat Spengler to second, twenty behind Tomczyk, while Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline claimed the Teams' Championship.[2]
Elsewhere, the season would see wins for Mike Rockenfeller and Jamie Green, while Edoardo Mortara and Spengler would claim victories at the DTM Showevent in Munich.[10] The season would also see Tom Kristensen make his final DTM appearance in place of Rockenfeller, Hankook take over as the official tyre suppliers, and serve as the last campaign for saloon style bodywork and in-race refuelling.[11]
Background[]
Calendar[]
There were several changes to the calendar ahead of the 2011 tour, with a reduction in Championship rounds to ten, and a return to having the second race in Hockenheim serve as the season finale.[1] Indeed, the DTM Shanghai round was removed at the behest of the Chinese motorsport's association, who wished to avoid a clash with China's first World Touring Car Championship race.[3] Instead, the DTM organised a special non-Championship Showevent, to be held at the Olympiastadion München during the summer break.[1]
Campaign Guide[]
The series would open on 1 May at the Hockenheimring, using the full Grand Prix circuit as usual.[1] Zandvoort would then host the second round two weeks later, before the series returned to Spielberg, Austria and the Red Bull Ring on 5 June.[1] A trip to the Lausitzring would then follow on 19 June, before the Norisring held the final race of the first half of the season on 3 July.[1]
The Showevent was to be held on 16 and 17 July, using a circuit created inside the Olympiastadion München, akin to the Race of Champions.[1] The Showevent would be split into two races, with an inter-marque race on the 16 July, before a knockout style tournament on the 17 July.[1]
The Championship was to resume on 7 August at the Nürburgring, before arriving at Brands Hatch on 4 September.[1] A fortnight later the series would head to Oschersleben on 18 September, before landing in Valencia and the Circuit Ricardo Tormo on 2 October.[1] With that the series would then head to the Hockenheimring for the second time, with the Season Finale scheduled for 23 October.[1]
