The 2012 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, otherwise known as the 2012 DTM Season, was the thirteenth edition of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, and the 26th season of the principle touring car racing in Germany.[1] The season would be a significant one in the Series' history, as it marked the return of BMW as a manufacturer to the Championship.[2]
The season would start on 29 April at the Hockenheimring, running for seven months before concluding at the legendary circuit on 21 October.[1] Ten races were scheduled with trips to the UK, Austria, the Netherlands and Spain alongside a quintet of German rounds, with a non-Championship event held in mid-July at the Olympiastadion München.[1]
Martin Tomczyk would start the season as the defending Champion, although the German racer had switched allegiances from Audi to newboys BMW.[3] Elsewhere, Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline would start the season as the reigning Teams' Champions, while the Manufacturers' Championship was reinstated for the first time since 2005.[4]
Gary Paffett would open the season strongly, winning the opening round of the season, before claiming his second win of the campaign at Brands Hatch.[5] He duly went on to lead the Championship at the halfway point of the season having finished in the top four of the first five rounds.[6]
Into the second half of the season and Bruno Spengler, who had claimed BMW's first win in only their second race at Lausitz, would emerge as a title pretender.[7] He duly went on to win two out of the following four races from pole position, setting up a shootout for the Championship at the season finale in Hockenheim.[8]
Spengler would win the battle and ultimately win the war against his former Mercedes counterpart, claiming victory at the Finale ahead of Paffett to claim the title by four points.[8] Elsewhere, Spengler's fine form ensured that BMW Team Schnitzer would win the Teams' Championship at the first attempt, while also led BMW to their maiden Manufacturers' Crown.[8]
Across the season five drivers would claim victory, with Jamie Green, Edoardo Mortara and Augusto Farfus joining Paffett and Spengler on the winners' list. It would also be a season of debuts for a handful of BMW factory drivers, including three-time WTCC Champion Andy Priaulx.[9]
