The 2013 Hockenheim Finale Race, otherwise known as the DTM Hockenheim Finale 2013 Race, was the tenth and final round of the 2013 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on 20 October 2013.[1] The race would see Timo Glock collect his maiden DTM victory, as BMW and Audi fought for the honours in the Teams and Manufacturers' Championships.[2]
Indeed, there was no more fighting to be had in the Drivers' Championship, for Mike Rockenfeller had claimed the crown a race early in Zandvoort.[3] Instead, his team, Audi Sport Team Phoenix would fight with BMW Team RBM and STIHL/AMG Mercedes, for the honours in the Teams' Championship, while BMW and Audi would complete a final duel for the Manufacturers' honours.[3]
BMW gained the initiative by dominating qualifying, as out-going Champion Bruno Spengler swept to pole position ahead of teammate Dirk Werner.[4] Indeed, the Bavarian marque would lock-out the shootout as Andy Priaulx and Glock shared the second row, leaving Miguel Molina as the best Audi pilot in fifth, while Robert Wickens claimed a lowly thirteenth to lead the Mercedes challenge.[4]
Rain would sweep across Hockenheim on Sunday morning, resulting in a soaking track for the final race of the season, and hence mean everyone would start on wet tyres.[2] The start of the race itself proved fairly tame, with Spengler easing into the lead ahead of a fast starting Priaulx, while Glock slipped to ninth.[2]
There was, however, more drama further around the opening tour, with Augusto Farfus getting spun around in the middle of the pack at turn two by Glock, before Filipe Albuquerque was punted out at Mercedes.[2] Out front, meanwhile, Spengler would dance away from Priaulx to establish a lead, while Roberto Merhi was penalised for jumping the start.[2]
The early stages would see Spengler open out a five second lead, while Glock began to slowly climb up the field.[2] Behind there would be very few early pit callers for fresh tyres due to the conditions, with the majority waiting to see how the track evolved before making either of the compulsory stops.[2]
Glock would eventually move into second as the rain drifted away, before inheriting the lead when Spengler made his stop after lap fourteen.[2] However, Glock was to show stunning pace on his worn tyres, with himself, Mattias Ekström, Daniel Juncadella and Merhi all going beyond half-distance on their starting set of tyres.[2]
Juncadella and Ekström would collide shortly after half-distance when the Spaniard locked up while lunging at the Swede at the hairpin, earning him a drive-through penalty.[2] Merhi sneaked past the pair of them before hunting down Glock, and would subsequently emerge ahead of the German racer by pitting two laps earlier than the #22 BMW.[2]
By that stage several drivers, led by Martin Tomczyk, had gambled on slicks, although it soon became clear that they could only match the pace of those on wets when they took big riskts.[2] As a result the majority of the field would take on a third set of wets when they made their seconds stops, with Tomczyk himself stopping for a third time to return to wets.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, Merhi was unable to escape from Glock, and duly lost out to the German racer once the #22 BMW's tyres were up to temperature.[2] With that the race was over, with Glock easing away from Merhi either side of their second stops, while Spengler and Ekström scrapped for third.[2]
With conditions poor at best the race would become a timed event, with the chequered flag emerging a lap earlier than planned due to reaching the 1:15:00.000 time limit.[2] Glock duly swept across the line to secure his maiden victory ahead of Merhi, while Spengler's third place ahead of Ekström ensured that BMW claimed the Manufacturers' honours ahead of Audi.[2] Fifth for Molina likewise ensured that Audi Sport Team Phoenix secured the Teams' Championship, with the remaining points awarded to Priaulx, Christian Vietoris, Werner, Gary Paffett and Juncadella.[2]
Background[]
Ahead of the 2013 season finale the DMSB announced the calendar for the 2014 season, which featured ten rounds akin to the 2013 calendar.[5] However, there would be major changes, with the additions of the Hungaroring on 1 June 2014, as well as a planned return to China as the penultimate round.[5] Those rounds replaced trips to Brands Hatch in the UK and the Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands, with the races at Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, Norisring, Red Bull Ring, Nürburgring and Lausitzring retained.[5] Likewise, Hockenheim would bookend the season as usual, with the opening round scheduled for 4 May while the finale was to be held on 19 October.[5]
Marque Muscles[]
The 2013 DTM Championship was over with a race to go, as Mike Rockenfeller had reached an unassailable tally of 142 points after nine rounds of the season. Augusto Farfus would hence have to settle for second, heading to Hockenheim 26 points behind but with a 45 point advantage over Christian Vietoris. Robert Wickens was next up in fourth ahead of Bruno Spengler and Gary Paffett, with all 22 drivers having scored.
In the Teams' Championship there would be three teams still in the fight ahead of the finale, as Audi Team Phoenix hit the head of the field. The Nürburgring based squad would arrive in Hockenheim with a three point lead over BMW Team RBM, while former leaders STIHL/AMG Mercedes had slipped ten off the lead in third. Elsewhere, Audi had moved to the top of the Manufacturers' Championship with one race to go, and would head to Hockenheim with an eight point advantage over BMW.
