The 2013 Oschersleben Race, otherwise known as the DTM Oschersleben 2013 Race, was the eighth round of the 2013 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in Oschersleben, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany on 15 September 2013.[1] The race would see Augusto Farfus claim victory in dominant fashion, as Mike Rockenfeller inched closer to the title.[2]
Qualifying had seen Bruno Spengler claim pole position, although the Canadian racer was subsequently hit with a five place grid penalty for using an incorrect tyre allocation.[3][4] Jamie Green would hence start the race from pole ahead of Farfus, Rockenfeller would start from third, while Gary Paffett was the best Mercedes pilot in seventh.[3]
The start of the race saw Farfus make an excellent start, charging ahead of Green to secure the lead as Spengler streaked from sixth to third.[2] Behind it was a clean start for the rest of the field, with Green just able to keep the Canadian at bay into the first corner.[2]
The race quickly settled down, with Spengler easing away from Green, while Spengler harassed the Brit for second.[2] Behind it was largely grid order with Mike Rockenfeller leading the charge, while Martin Tomczyk was penalised for jumping the lights.[2]
Rockenfeller was the first driver to stop on lap three, and duly began lapping faster than Farfus, albeit by a small margin.[2] A significant number of drivers would follow the German in to ditch the unfavoured prime tyres at the earliest moment, with the big loser being Robert Wickens as he slipped down the order.[2]
Rockenfeller's quick pace would carry him past Green and Spengler when they made their stops, before Farfus stopped from the lead and emerged just ahead of the German racer.[2] The pair lapped fairly closely for a few laps after that, before Farfus began to ease clear once again on fresher tyres.[2]
Indeed, the gap between the duo would remain stable through the second round of stops, with Farfus maintaining a small margin.[2] Behind, Wickens would make a strong climb up the order to challenge Spengler, only for the two Canadian's come together mid-race when the #10 Mercedes scraped inside the #1 BMW at turn one.[2] Spengler retaliated and spun Wickens around in turn two, with both later retiring with damage from the contact.[2]
With that the race was run, with Farfus cruising to the finish safely ahead of Rockenfeller to secure victory, and keep his slim title hopes alive.[2]
Background[]
Mike Rockenfeller continued to extend his lead in the DTM Championship, as Bruno Spengler fell to fourth from second. Christian Vietoris and Robert Wickens leapt ahead of the Canadian as the two Mercedes Junior Drivers led the Mercedes challenge. Augusto Farfus moved to within a point of his stable mate Spengler, as Gary Paffett fell to sixth from third. Martin Tomczyk and Miguel Molina had become the latest men to add their name to the scorers list, leaving Filipe Albuquerque as the only non-scorer in the field.
HWA Team II extended their lead in the Teams' Championship, pulling over 30 points clear of Audi Team Phoenix in second. The first BMW backed team remained BMW Team Schnitzer, but BMW Team RBM had closed to within a point of them, as the top four broke away from the pack. BMW themselves remained at the top of the Brands' Championship, just staying ahead of Mercedes, as Audi lost ground again.

- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
Milestones[]
- 150th DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters race to be staged since the series was reformed in 2000.[7]
- It was also the 147th Championship race to be staged.
- 100th entry for Gary Paffett.[7]
- Third victory for Augusto Farfus.
- Maiden fastest lap recorded by Joey Hand.
Standings[]
Mike Rockenfeller had continued his ominous march towards the Championship, having moved 33 points clear with two rounds to go. Indeed, only Augusto Farfus could deny the German racer the title, although Rockenfeller would win the crown regardless in Zandvoort if he finished either first or second. Farfus, in contrast, would have to outscore Rockenfeller by seven points in the Netherlands just to keep his title hopes alive, while the rest of the field would have to fight for third.
In the Teams' Championship it was STIHL/AMG Mercedes who still led the charge, despite having failed to score in Oschersleben. Audi Team Phoenix were next up in second ahead of BMW Team RBM, while BMW Team Schnitzer completed the top four. Elsewhere, BMW had retained the initiative in the Manufacturers' Championship, although Audi had closed to within nine points after jumping Mercedes in Oschersleben.
