2013 Oschersleben Race | 2013 Hockenheim Finale Race |
The 2013 Zandvoort Race, otherwise known as the DTM Zandvoort 2013 Race, was the ninth race of the 2013 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in Zandvoort, North Holland, Netherlands on 29 September 2013.[1] The race would see Augusto Farfus secure victory, as Mike Rockenfeller finished second to secure the Championship with a race to spare.[2]
Qualifying had seen Marco Wittmann secure his maiden DTM pole position, edging out title pretender Farfus by 0.085s as BMW locked out the front row.[3] Rockenfeller, meanwhile, would start from third alongside Audi stablemate Timo Scheider, while Gary Paffett was the best Mercedes pilot in twelfth.[3]
The start of the race saw Farfus get a perfect launch, surging inside of stablemate Wittmann to secure the lead into Tarzan.[2] Rockenfeller went with him, with officials deciding to investigate his start, although the German's efforts were thwarted by an ambitious Wittmann, who kept his BMW alongside the #19 Audi around the outside of Tarzan to hold second.[2]
The rest of the field made it through cleanly, although Roberto Merhi would retire at the end of the opening tour after unseen contact.[2] Out front, meanwhile, Farfus would make good his escape in the lead as Wittmann moved to block Rockenfeller, while the German racer himself had protection behind in the form of Filipe Albuquerque.[2]
The race soon settled down, with the first stops coming on lap three by several drivers who had opted to start the race on prime tyres.[2] Out front, meanwhile, Farfus would establish a five second lead before Rockenfeller finally broke Wittmann's resistance, before going on to chip away at the Brazilian's lead.[2]
Indeed, both Rockenfeller and Farfus were on a soft-prime-prime strategy, and as the first stint wore on the #19 Audi would close onto the tail of the #7 BMW.[2] However, the moment that Rockenfeller moved within striking distance of Farfus the Brazilian would peel off to serve his stop, and duly used the undercut to remain ahead of Rockenfeller when the German stopped a few moments later.[2]
Those two were on their own from that moment on, as Audi and BMW used their other drivers in a 150 mph game of chess around the Zandvoort circuit.[2] Indeed, Timo Scheider would use a well picked strategy to climb to third ahead of Wittmann, while Adrien Tambay, Joey Hand and Filipe Albuquerque scrapped for fifth.[2]
Into the closing stages and the race seemed to be settled, with everyone having completed their second stop shortly after half-distance.[2] Then, with seven laps to go Dirk Werner was sent into the barriers by Jamie Green, triggering a late Safety Car that bunched the field back up.[2]
However, Farfus would ace the restart to establish a small but significant lead, with Rockenfeller able to stalk the Brazilian with Scheider remaining as a rear-gunner.[2] Instead, all of the attention was on Mattias Ekström, who would scythe up the field in the final laps with soft Hankook tyres, climbing from tenth to fourth before the chequered flag fell.[2]
Indeed, moments after the #11 Audi danced past Wittmann's #21 BMW the race and Championship was over, with Farfus securing victory a second clear of new Champion Rockenfeller.[2] Scheider was next up to complete the podium, his first since 2011, while Ekström and Wittmann completed the top five.[2] Tambay, Hand and Albuquerque were next up ahead of Paffett in the best of the Mercedes, while Miguel Molina completed the scorers in tenth.[2]
Background[]
Mike Rockenfeller had continued his ominous march towards the Championship, having moved 33 points clear with two rounds to go. Indeed, only Augusto Farfus could deny the German racer the title, although Rockenfeller would win the crown regardless in Zandvoort if he finished either first or second. Farfus, in contrast, would have to outscore Rockenfeller by seven points in the Netherlands just to keep his title hopes alive, while the rest of the field would have to fight for third.
In the Teams' Championship it was STIHL/AMG Mercedes who still led the charge, despite having failed to score in Oschersleben. Audi Team Phoenix were next up in second ahead of BMW Team RBM, while BMW Team Schnitzer completed the top four. Elsewhere, BMW had retained the initiative in the Manufacturers' Championship, although Audi had closed to within nine points after jumping Mercedes in Oschersleben.

Milestones[]
- Mike Rockenfeller declared as the 2013 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship Champion.
- This was Rockenfeller's maiden DTM title.
- Maiden pole position for Marco Wittmann.
- Augusto Farfus claimed his fourth and final victory.
Standings[]
The 2013 DTM Championship was over with a race to go, as Mike Rockenfeller had reached an unassailable tally of 142 points after nine rounds of the season. Augusto Farfus would hence have to settle for second, heading to Hockenheim 26 points behind but with a 45 point advantage over Christian Vietoris. Robert Wickens was next up in fourth ahead of Bruno Spengler and Gary Paffett, with all 22 drivers having scored.
In the Teams' Championship there would be three teams still in the fight ahead of the finale, as Audi Team Phoenix hit the head of the field. The Nürburgring based squad would arrive in Hockenheim with a three point lead over BMW Team RBM, while former leaders STIHL/AMG Mercedes had slipped ten off the lead in third. Elsewhere, Audi had moved to the top of the Manufacturers' Championship with one race to go, and would head to Hockenheim with an eight point advantage over BMW.
