2015 Hockenheim Opening Race 2 | 2015 Lausitzring Race 2 |
The 2015 Lausitzring Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Lausitz 2015 Race 1, was the third round of the 2015 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany on 30 May 2015.[1] The race would see Jamie Green sweep to victory for the second time in 2015, having overcome Audi stablemate Miguel Molina to secure the lead.[2]
Qualifying for the third round would see Miguel Molina emerge with pole position, in a session threatened by rain throughout, although it failed to materialise.[3] Green would grab second ahead of Edoardo Mortara and Mattias Ekström, while Pascal Wehrlein and Maxime Martin would lead the respective charges of Mercedes and BMW from fifth and seventh.[3]
The start of the race saw Molina sprint into an early lead, while Green had to fend off a double move from Mortara and Ekström to hold second.[2] Behind, Martin dived past Wehrlein and Robert Wickens to secure fifth, albeit with the aid of a brush across the grass in turn two, with Wickens slipping the #6 Mercedes in behind.[2]
Martin tried to simultaneously stick with the Audis out front and keep Wickens and co. behind, and duly ended up in no-mans land in fifth.[2] Indeed, Molina would lead Green, Mortara and Ekström in an early sprint away from the rest of the field, while Paul di Resta and Augusto Farfus clashed in the midfield.[2]
As the race developed it seemed as if Wehrlein would wake up, with the German racer dancing past teammate Wickens before harassing Martin.[2] Elsewhere, more contact left Nico Müller and António Félix da Costa with damage, while Tom Blomqvist threw away a potential points finish by sliding into the gravel.[2]
Wehrlein's progress, which included a successful lunge on Martin, prompted some movement amongst the leading Audis, with Green elbowing his way past Molina for the lead with ten minutes to go.[2] Mortara and Ekström then pulled identical moves to dump the Spaniard off the podium, although Molina had enough in hand to keep Wehrlein at bay.[2]
With that the race was run, with Green sweeping across the line to claim victory and the Championship lead ahead of Mortara and Ekström.[2] Molina was next having held Wehrlein at bay, while Wickens had darted past Martin to secure sixth, while Timo Scheider, Mike Rockenfeller and Daniel Juncadella secured the remaining points.[2]
Background[]
Edoardo Mortara arrived at the Lausitzring in Lausitz at the head of the Drivers' Championship, despite not winning either race outright at the DTM Festival. Mattias Ekström and Jamie Green (winners in Hockenheim) sat in joint second in the Championship, with defending Champion Marco Wittmann in ninth. Maximilian Götz finished best of the rookies in Hockenheim, although none of them scored a point during their debut weekend.
Audi Team Rosberg lead the way in the Teams' Championship by three points as the field arrived in Lausitz, with Green and Nico Müller's combined tally beating Audi Team Abt team. Audi's dominance of the Hockenheim weekend saw them in the lead of the Manufacturers' Championship by almost 50 points, with Mercedes, led by the two HWA teams, in second.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for race one seemed to be under threat from rain, with most of the drivers opting to take to the track immediately hoping to set a banker lap.[3]
Report[]
Edoardo Mortara emerged at the top after the first bout, but, with the rain failing to materialise, he fell down the order in the final minutes, unable to best his earlier time.[3] Pascal Wehrlein was the only man to do something different, emerging for his only run in the session as the rest flooded in after their first runs.[3]
In the end, 22 of the 24 drivers ended the session within a second of Miguel Molina's time, which earned the Spaniard pole position for the fourth time.[3] Jamie Green shared the front row with Molina come the end of the session, with Mortara down to third, and Mattias Ekström using a last gasp effort to snatch fourth.[3] Wehrlein's unusual approach saw him take fifth, with Adrien Tambay relegated to the back of the grid (and not setting a competitive time) for engine repairs.[3]
During the session, Marco Wittmann and Augusto Farfus were placed under investigation for reportedly blocking other drivers unfairly.[5] After the session, both were handed five place penalties, which meant Wittmann would have to start from eleventh, while Farfus dropped to the back row.[5]

Race[]
The first race of the weekend was the shorter 40 minute format, with no stops.[2] The race was also the first race to be held in the evening after the new DTM format was announced, with the race starting at around 7:00pm local time.[2]
Report[]
Miguel Molina made the best start off the line, launching ahead of Jamie Green whom was almost overhauled by his Audi allies.[2] Edoardo Mortara and Mattias Ekström pulled in behind to form an all Audi top four, as Maxime Martin leapt into fifth with a dubious move around the outside of the first corner, before bouncing back onto the circuit on the inside of turn two.[2] Robert Wickens was the best placed Mercedes in sixth, as all the drivers survived the first lap.[2]
There was action all through the field in the opening laps, as Martin tried to keep up with the four Audis at the front.[2] Further back, and Augusto Farfus was eliminated from the race after heavy contact with Paul di Resta, although neither the Brazilian or the Scot were found to be a fault.[2] DRS was enabled on lap four, with Molina beginning to pull a gap after it emerged that DRS was not working on Green's car.[2]
Pascal Wehrlein was the man on the charge as the first ten minutes passed, making his way onto the back of Wickens, quickly making his way past the Canadian.[2] Further down, Nico Müller and António Félix da Costa came together, with the Swiss driver sent into a spin, although da Costa went on without damage.[2] Tom Blomqvist, meanwhile, tumbled out of the top ten after running off the track at turn eleven, escaping from the gravel an rejoining.[2]
Daniel Juncadella and Marco Wittmann were to be found battling as the race ticked into its final minutes, although a late lunge into turn one by the Spaniard was easily beaten by Wittmann.[2] Wehrlein, meanwhile, had clawed his way onto the back of Martin, prompting the Audis at the head of the field to respond.[2] Green was the first, using his superior speed to force his way past Molina, catching the leader unawares into the first corner.[2]
It was a case of deja vu for Molina over the following laps, as Mortara and Ekstrom used the same technique to get past into the first corner.[2] A three way scrap for fourth emerged, although Molina's stubborn defence meant that Martin fell to the charging Wehrlein.[2]
Green, meanwhile, pulled smartly ahead, establishing a four second lead before taking his second win of the season.[2] Mortara and Ekstrom completed the podium, with Molina successful in defending from Wehrlein (best of the Mercs). Wickens followed his Mercedes team mate over the line, having taken Martin (best of the BMWs) in the closing stages.[2]

Milestones[]
- Eleventh career victory for Jamie Green.
Standings[]
Jamie Green had returned to the lead of the Championship after his second win of the campaign, which had moved him two ahead of Edoardo Mortara. Mortara himself was eight clear of Mattias Ekström, while Pascal Wehrlein had slipped eighteen off the lead in fourth. Mike Rockenfeller then completed the early top five, albeit some 30 points off the lead, with eighteen drivers on the scoresheet.
In the Teams' Championship it was still Audi Team Rosberg who led the way, and had managed to enhance their advantage to six points. Audi Team Abt Sportsline were their closest challengers in second, while their sister squad Audi Team Abt were in third on 48. Audi therefore had a dominant lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, holding 182 points after the opening three rounds.
