The 2015 Lausitzring Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Lausitz 2015 Race 2, was the fourth round of the 2015 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany on 31 May 2015.[1] The race would see Jamie Green collect his third victory of the campaign, after a race long battle with Mattias Ekström.[2]

Indeed, having won the Saturday Race, Green would sweep to pole position for the Sunday race in qualifying, half a second clear of Ekström.[3] Audis would also lock-out the second row, courtesy of Timo Scheider and Miguel Molina, while Maxime Martin qualified in fifth to be the best of the BMWs.[3]

The start of the race would see Ekström out-drag Green into the first corner, before securing the lead on the brakes.[2] Behind, Martin tried to repeat his Race 1 move around the outside but had to settle for fifth, with the rest of the field making it through the hairpin-esque corner without issue.[2]

Further around the opening tour Robert Wickens was accused of pushing Marco Wittmann into the gravel, although both would continue.[2] Ekström, meanwhile, would ease away from Green in a bid to escape from DRS range, which came on-line on lap three.[2]

Ultimately, Ekström would fail to break far enough ahead, with Green using DRS to harass the Swede for the lead.[2] He duly scythed past the Swede into turn one on lap seven, but had to relinquish it when Ekström slid the #5 Audi back inside, before successfully repeating the move a lap later.[2]

Green subsequently established a small lead over Ekström, with the order settling down until the pit window opened on lap fourteen.[2] Miguel Molina was the first to stop when the pits opened, with the rest of the field coming in over the next seven laps.[2]

Once the pit stops were out of the way the stalemate in the fight for the lead resumed, with Ekström simply unable to trouble Green with more than a half-hearted look.[2] Elsewhere, there would be a lot of contact between the Mercedes and BMW drivers, with Pascal Wehrlein barging past António Félix da Costa, while Augusto Farfus had to retire after whacking Maximilian Götz.[2]

However, it was an off for Lucas Auer all on his own that would disrupt the race, with the Safety Car being called out as the Austrian beached his Mercedes in the gravel.[2] The SC remained out for five laps, and put Ekström right on Green's tail, although the Brit would break clear when the race resumed.[2]

With that the race was run, with Green sweeping across the line to claim victory, becoming the first driver since Laurent Aïello in 2002 to claim two race victories in a single race meeting.[2] Ekström was next up ahead of Molina, Scheider and Edoardo Mortara, while Daniel Juncadella was the best of the Mercedes in sixth.[2] Christian Vietoris was next up ahead of Martin, while Nico Müller and Mike Rockenfeller completed the scorers.[2]

Background[]

Jamie Green had returned to the lead of the Championship after his second win of the campaign, which had moved him two ahead of Edoardo Mortara. Mortara himself was eight clear of Mattias Ekström, while Pascal Wehrlein had slipped eighteen off the lead in fourth. Mike Rockenfeller then completed the early top five, albeit some 30 points off the lead, with eighteen drivers on the scoresheet.

In the Teams' Championship it was still Audi Team Rosberg who led the way, and had managed to enhance their advantage to six points. Audi Team Abt Sportsline were their closest challengers in second, while their sister squad Audi Team Abt were in third on 48. Audi therefore had a dominant lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, holding 182 points after the opening three rounds.

Practice[]

Qualifying[]

Miguel Molina topped the times early on, but lost out on pole in the final moments, as Jamie Green produced a stunning lap to go more than half a second faster than anyone else.[3]

Report[]

Mattias Ekström swung his Audi into second, with another double champion, Timo Scheider to be found in third.[3] Molina dropped to fourth, beating Maxime Martin, one of only two BMWs in the top ten, amid a sea of Bavarian boys.[3] Augusto Farfus sat in seventh, ahead of the second Audi Team Rosberg car of Nico Müller, with Mike Rockenfeller in ninth meaning there were seven Audis in the top ten.[3]

It was a desperate situation for Mercedes, however, at a track they usually dominate, with Daniel Juncadella their best placed car in tenth.[3] HWA were also struggling, with the main Mercedes factory car of Pascal Wehrlein to be found down in fourteenth, although Christian Vietoris and Robert Wickens were in close attendance.[3]

Other strugglers in the field were to be found further down, with Champion Marco Wittmann down in seventeenth, although it must be said that 23 of the 24 cars were seperated, overall, by less than a second.[3] If Green's time was factored out, then a little over half a second covered second to 23rd, with Maximilian Götz not setting a time at all.[3]

Race[]

A dry Sunday greeted the DTM field for the hour long DTM race of the weekend, with a compulsory pitstop to be taken at any time during the race.[2] With no changes to the grid, the formation lap started at 14:20 local time to signal the start of the race.[2]

Report[]

Mattias Ekström stole the lead from Jamie Green off the line, as the field all survived the first corner again, with Maxime Martin trying another ambitious move around the outside to gain places.[2] Marco Wittmann went very wide and into the gravel, tumbling down to the back of the field, with Robert Wickens under investigation for causing it.[2] Meanwhile, Ekström steadily built a lead at the front, although remained within a second of Green as Tom Blomqvist retired before the end of lap three.[2]

DRS became active on lap four, while Gary Paffett came into the pits to retire, with Green now able to get onto the back of Ekström.[2] Green tried a dive down the inside of Ekström into turn one on lap seven, taking the lead briefly, as the Swede managed to return the favour by cutting back inside the Brit into the next corner.[2] A lap later, however, Green tried the same move, and was successful in holding the position.[2]

Lap fourteen saw the first cars take their mandatory pitstop, with Miguel Molina leading the charge.[2] The next seven laps saw the majority of the field pit, with the order remaining the same, although Timo Scheider was in a position to challenge Molina after.[2] Pascal Wehrlein's recovery from a poor start saw him locked in battle with António Félix da Costa over seventeenth, with the Mercedes F1 reserve driver put under investigation for causing a collision with the Formula E driver.[2]

Augusto Farfus brought his car into the pits to retire after heavy contact with Maximilian Götz, who also came into the pits, although his was for his mandatory stop.[2] Wehrlein was cleared of causing a collision with da Costa, and, after taking advantage of Farfus' dramas, took Timo Glock for fourteenth.[2] Wickens ran wide after locking up into the first corner, before Lucas Auer ran too wide and spun in the gravel, beaching himself.[2]

The safety car was out for around five laps, destroying Green's lead, but the Brit was quick to re-establish it after the restart, with a little over five minutes to go.[2] Adrien Tambay was sent off the track by Bruno Spengler after contact, with the Canadian handed a time penalty for causing the incident, with Tambay out of the race.[2] But, no one could stop Green at the front of the field, as he became the first driver since Laurent Aïello to take two victories in a DTM weekend.[2]

Ekström took second to match Edoardo Mortara's tally of 58 (as the Italian finished in fifth), with Scheider unable to find his way past Molina for third.[2] Martin became the best placed BMW after Spengler's relegation, although his eighth place meant he finished behind Daniel Juncadella, whom just missed out on fifth in a last lap battle with Mortara.[2] Mike Rockenfeller completed the point scorers.

Milestones[]

Standings[]

Jamie Green left the Lausitzring at the summit of the Championship, and having won three of the four opening races, was one of the favourites for the Championship. Mattias Ekström and Edoardo Mortara were the only drivers within a race victory of him, and ensured that Audi were in a dominant position for the Brands Championship. Miguel Molina made it four Audis in the top five, with Pascal Wehrlein the interloper in fourth for Mercedes-Benz.

Green's superb start also meant that Audi Team Rosberg led the Teams Championship, ahead of the first of the Audi Team Abt Sportsline entries on wins. The second Abt pairing ensured an all Audi top three, with the second HWA pair of Wehrlein and Christian Vietoris in fourth. It had not been a good start for BMW, however, as they trailed in all three Championships, with BMW Team RMG their best outfit in sixth.
