2016 Nürburgring Race 2 | 2016 Hungaroring Race 2 |
The 2016 Hungaroring Race 1, alternately known as the DTM Budapest 2016 Race 1, was the fifteenth round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, Pest, Hungary, on 24 September 2016.[1] The race would see Edoardo Mortara secure a Grand Slam victory as he enhanced his title credentials, leading every lap to the close the gap to Marco Wittmann at the head of the title hunt.[2]
Qualifying had seen Mortara storm to pole position, beating stablemate and fellow title pretender Jamie Green by 0.082s.[3] Indeed, Audi had dominated the session, claiming positions first-through-eighth, while Felix Rosenqvist secured ninth for Mercedes ahead of Wittmann, the best of the BMWs.[3]
Mortara duly converted pole position to a lead at the start of the race, sprinting clear of Green and Miguel Molina.[2] Behind, Rosenqvist and Wittmann got themselves amongst the Audis, while Maxime Martin smacked into Mattias Ekström and sent both himself and the Swede to the back of the field.[2]
Yet, with that the race would settle down, with Mortara and Green escaping at the head of the field, with the Brit not making an attack.[2] Elsewhere, Wittmann would run in seventh ahead of a ferocious scrap between Rosenqvist and Timo Scheider, while Robert Wickens was up to tenth.[2]
All of the action was instead outside of the top ten, with António Félix da Costa and Paul di Resta smashing together at turn one, resulting in the Scot suffering a suspension failure.[2] Lucas Auer, meanwhile, would fight his way up the field with a strong series of overtakes, including a dance around Augusto Farfus, with Ekström likewise stalking up the field.[2] However, the Swede would find Farfus particularly troublesome, with the Brazilian racer duly forcing the #5 Audi off circuit, opening the door for Christian Vietoris to pass both.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, the status-quo would be maintained to the chequered flag, with Mortara sweeping through ahead of Green to secure an impressive victory.[2] Molina was next up in third ahead of Mike Rockenfeller and Nico Müller, while Adrien Tambay held sixth to the line to complete an all-Audi top six.[2] Wittmann was next up ahead of Rosenqvist and Scheider, while Wickens stalked them to the line for tenth.[2]
Background[]
Marco Wittmann would head to the Hungaroring with a healthy lead in the Championship as the seventh weekend of the season came to a conclusion, moving onto 170 points. That meant that second placed Edoardo Mortara was 33 points behind after his victory in the second Nürburgring race, while Robert Wickens had slipped to third. Jamie Green was still in the title hunt as well as Paul di Resta, although they and Wickens would have to have a strong weekend in Hungary to maintain their title ambitions.
In the Teams' Championship BMW Team RMG would maintain their lead in the Championship, although their advantage had been reduced to nine points. Audi Team Abt Sportsline were their biggest threat in second, while BMW Team RBM were in third, 50 points behind second placed Abt Sportsline. BMW, meanwhile, would hold onto the initiative in the Constructors' Championship, moving onto 521 points and hence held a 57 point lead over Audi in second.

Milestones[]
- Edoardo Mortara claimed his seventh victory.
Standings[]
Victory for Edoardo Mortara made him a major title pretender with three races to go, with the Italian moving to within fourteen points of leader Marco Wittmann. Indeed, that result meant that the title battle would make it to the season finale in Hockenheim, regardless of the result in the Sunday Race in Budapest. Jamie Green would, however, have to have a strong result on Sunday if he was to remain a pretender.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Abt Sportsline had moved back to the top of the table, ending the mid-point in the Budapest weekend with 244 points. That left them six ahead of BMW Team RMG at the head of the field, while BMW Team RBM had slipped some 75 points behind in third. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Audi had climbed to the top of the pile ahead of BMW, while the weight handicapped Mercedes had slipped even further off the lead in third.
