The 2016 Hungaroring Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Budapest 2016 Race 2, was the sixteenth round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, Pest, Hungary, on the 25 September 2016.[1] The race would see Mattias Ekström sweep to his first and only victory of the campaign, as title pretenders Marco Wittmann and Edoardo Mortara collided.[2]
Mortara had gained the initiative in qualifying, as he swept to his second pole position of the weekend ahead of teammate Ekström.[3] Championship leader Wittmann would, however, secure third, just 0.001s behind the #5 Audi, with outside shot for the crown Jamie Green scoring fourth.[3] Robert Wickens, the lead driver in the Championship for Mercedes, would be the Stuttgart marque's only representative in the top ten, claiming eighth on the grid.[3]
After a false start due to an out-of-position Wickens, the successful start of the race saw Mortara make a poor start, allowing Wittmann to charge alongside, elbowing his way along the outside of the #48 Audi as Mortara squeezed him towards the grass.[2] Wittmann retaliated and steered across Mortara as he pulled ahead, with the resulting contact pitching Wittmann into a side-swipe with Green, although miraculously all continued.[2]
Wittmann duly slipped back into the middle of the pack, while Mortara seemed to have escaped with second behind Ekström.[2] However, moments after the Swede handed the lead back to the Italian, Mortara would suffer a slow puncture and come into the pits for a tyre change.[2]
With Mortara out of contention Wittmann was left in fourth, with both he and Mortara both being slapped with warnings for their part in the incident.[2] However, the race soon settled into a procession, with Ekström escaping from Adrien Tambay at the head of the field, while Daniel Juncadella assumed control of third.[2]
The pitstop phase for the leaders was started by Wittmann with 27 minutes to go, with the German emerging in between stablemates António Félix da Costa and Tom Blomqvist whom had already stopped.[2] da Costa duly waved his teammate through to grant him the lead place among those that had stopped.[2]
Ekström, Tambay and Juncadella all stopped and rejoined ahead of the German racer, and duly pulled clear as the #11 BMW struggled to match their pace.[2] Indeed, Wittmann's status in fourth was only secured by the fact that he had three de jure teammates behind him, all of whom were under orders not to attack the Bavarian marque's lead driver.[2]
With that the race was run, with Ekström able to cruise through the second stint to secure his first victory since 2015 Spielberg Race 2, with Tambay a lonely second.[2] Juncadella completed the podium ahead of Wittmann, with the #11 BMW leading da Costa, Blomqvist and Timo Glock across the line.[2] Timo Scheider, Maxime Martin and Mike Rockenfeller claimed the remaining points, while Mortara retired in the closing stages.[2]
After the race, however, there would be a dramatic twist, as Wittmann and Juncadella were both disqualified for failing post-race scrutineering.[4] That elevated da Costa onto the podium and Martin Tomczyk and Wickens into the points, and meant that Wittmann held a fourteen point lead over Mortara ahead of the season finale in Hockenheim.[4]
Background[]
Victory for Edoardo Mortara in the first battle of Budapest had made him a major title pretender with three races to go, with the Italian having moved to within fourteen points of leader Marco Wittmann. Indeed, that result meant that the title battle would make it to the season finale in Hockenheim, regardless of the result in the Sunday Race in Budapest. Jamie Green would, however, have to have a strong result on Sunday if he was to remain a pretender.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Abt Sportsline had moved back to the top of the table, ending the mid-point in the Budapest weekend with 244 points. That left them six ahead of BMW Team RMG at the head of the field, while BMW Team RBM had slipped some 75 points behind in third. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Audi had climbed to the top of the pile ahead of BMW, while the weight handicapped Mercedes had slipped even further off the lead in third.

- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
- * Mortara was still classified despite retiring as he had completed 75% of the race distance.[5]
- † Juncadella and Wittmann were disqualified after post-race scrutineering after excessive wear was found to their skid blocks.[4]
Milestones[]
- 24th career victory for Mattias Ekström.
Standings[]
The post-race modifications to the finishing order in the second Hungarian race would have a major impact in the Championship, as it kept a status-quo at the head of the field. Indeed, Marco Wittmann would head into the season finale in Hockenheim with 176 points to his credit, leaving him fourteen ahead of Edoardo Mortara in second. Jamie Green had also remained in the hunt, but was facing a 39 point deficit ahead of the finale, and hence would likely have to win both races to challenge for the crown.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Abt Sportsline had established a fair lead at the head of the hunt, having moved 25 points clear atop the pile. BMW Team RMG were their closest challengers in second, while BMW Team RBM occupied third and were still mathematically in the hunt, but would require a lot of results in their favour. Audi, meanwhile, would top the Manufacturers' Championship ahead of the season finale, having secured a 37 point advantage over BMW.
