The 2016 Lausitzring Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Lausitz 2016, was the fifth round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany, on 4 June 2016.[1] The race would see Miguel Molina claim pole, victory and fastest lap, a stunning turn around for a driver who had only claimed one point since the start of the campaign.[2]
Indeed, the Spaniard was the man to beat across the day, claiming pole position after fending off a late challenge from Jamie Green.[3] Marco Wittmann was best of the rest for BMW ahead of a trio of Mercedes, led by factory driver Robert Wickens, with Audi otherwise dominating the top ten.[3]
However, Molina would have a fight on his hands at the start, as both he and Green bogged down off the grid and were slow away.[2] That allowed Wittmann to sniff around and challenge for the lead, but with two Audis blocking his way, the German instead found himself having to back off, and hence allow Wickens to sweep into third.[2]
Green threw everything he had at Molina on the opening tour, and duly eased ahead of the Spaniard after completing half of the opening lap side-by-side.[2] Molina duly tucked in behind the Brit and plotted his revenge, with the two Audis able to ease away from Wickens in the early laps.[2]
Indeed, once they had built a fair lead over Wickens, Molina would make his bid for the lead, sending a lunge at Green into turn one.[2] The lateness of the lunge and a sense of self-preservation for Green resulted in the Brit yielding the lead to the #17 Audi, with Molina soon establishing a lead of his own.[2]
With Molina powering clear and Green on his own, attention focused on the fight for third, with Wickens having to place his #6 Mercedes carefully to keep the #11 BMW of Wittmann at bay.[2] However, as the early laps ticked away that fight would fizzle out, resulting in Wittmann having to look over in his mirrors to keep an eye on a looming Christian Vietoris.[2]
Elsewhere, Martin Tomczyk was smacked out of the race by rookie racer Esteban Ocon, with the Frenchman taking the blame for the incident and receiving a drive-through penalty.[2] That left the #34 Mercedes at the back of the field, as in the middle of the pack Mattias Ekström dived past Lucas Auer for sixth, before going on to harass Vietoris.[2]
With that the race was over, with Molina recording a series of fastest laps en-route to claiming victory, his second in the Series.[2] Green was a couple of seconds behind in second ahead of Wickens, while Wittmann fended off Vietoris and Ekström to claim fourth and the Championship lead.[2] Auer was next up ahead of Edoardo Mortara, while Maxime Martin and Nico Müller rounded out the scorers.[2]
Background[]
It would be Paul di Resta who left Austria with the lead in the DTM Championship, a surprise given the fact that he had only scored minor points across the entire weekend. Edoardo Mortara was up into second as previous occupier Robert Wickens tumbled down to eighth. Timo Glock was the biggest climber of the weekend, leaping up fourteen places to claim third, with Maxime Martin, Marco Wittmann, Tom Blomqvist and Augusto Farfus all getting ahead of Canadian Wickens.
BMW Team RMG shot to the top of the Teams' Championship after their drivers claimed top honours in both races, a feat that also propelled BMW to the top of the Brands Standings. BMW Team RBM were up in second ahead of Abt Sportsline, the first Audi backed team, as they held on to third. It had been a dismal weekend for Mercedes, however, as they slipped over 100 points back in the Brands Championship, their only points across the weekend having been scored by early title pretender di Resta.
