The 2016 Lausitzring Race 2, otherwise formally known as the DTM Lausitz 2016 Race 2, was the sixth round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany, on 5 June 2016.[1] The race would see Lucas Auer secure his maiden DTM victory, becoming the first Austrian racer to win in the modern DTM era.[2]
Auer was the man to beat in the now lightened #22 Mercedes, with the Austrian sweeping to his second DTM pole ahead of teammate Christian Vietoris.[3] Timo Glock was the best non-Mercedes in third ahead of Robert Wickens, with Mike Rockenfeller leading the Audi charge from fifth.[3]
The start of the race saw Auer instantly jump clear, leaving Wickens to attack Glock for second as Vietoris had been given a grid penalty.[2] The Canadian duly scrambled ahead around the outside of the first corner, as behind Rockenfeller jumped the lights and was slapped with a drive-through penalty.[2]
The race soon settled down, with Auer able to establish a small lead over Wickens, while behind Glock was being harassed by a fast starting Gary Paffett.[2] That fight was, however, paused by an early yellow flag at turn one, as Augusto Farfus was punted out of the race by Miguel Molina, having squeezed the Spaniard towards the pitwall.[2]
With that incident cleared attention focused on the pits, with Wickens and Glock the first of the lead drivers to stop on lap fifteen, with the latter suffering a slow stop.[2] Paffett stopped a lap later and duly emerged ahead, while confusion between the two Audi Abt teams resulted in Edoardo Mortara hitting a pit member of the sister crew, and a slow stop for himself.[2]
Auer made his stop on lap seventeen, handing the lead Mattias Ekström who was gambling on another long-short pit strategy for the second race in succession.[2] The Swede would first pass Jamie Green as the Brit ran onto the grass, before rejoining in fifth behind the #53 Audi when he completed his stop on lap 25.[2]
Armed with fresh tyres it was Ekström who stole the show in the closing stages, relentlessly closing on Green as the Brit himself eased onto Paffett's tail.[2] The #53 Audi duly elbowed its way past the #2 Mercedes at the first corner for third, swiftly following by Ekström's #5 Audi, before the veteran Swede dived past the sister Audi for third on the following tour.[2]
With that the race was run, with Auer remaining unopposed through to the chequered flag to collect his maiden victory.[2] Ekström, meanwhile, would carry on to rob Wickens of second place in the final laps, with the Canadian himself just managing to keep Green at bay to secure third.[2] Paffett was next up ahead of Marco Wittmann, with Vietoris, Nico Müller, Bruno Spengler and Glock claiming the remaining points.[2]
Background[]
Marco Wittmann had moved to the top of the Championship after the fifth bout of the season, ending Saturday at Lausitz with 47 points to his credit. That left him three ahead of Edoardo Mortara in second, while former leader Paul di Resta had slipped four off the lead to third. Robert Wickens had moved up level with the Scot on 43 points, while Maxime Martin completed the top five on 39.
In the Teams' Championship BMW Team RMG had held onto their advantage at the head of the field, heading into the Sunday race with 84 points to their credit. BMW Team RBM were next up in second, a point ahead of Audi Team ABT Sportsline, while Mercedes Team HWA II led their marque's charge from fifth. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, BMW had retained the lead with 217 points, with Audi on 164 and Mercedes on 124.

- * di Resta was still classified despite retiring as he had completed 75% of the race distance.[4]
Milestones[]
- Maiden victory for Lucas Auer
- This was also the first win for an Austrian driver in the modern era of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters.
Standings[]
Robert Wickens claimed the lead in the DTM Championship after the Lausitzring meeting, his two quiet drives to the podium carrying him up the order. Marco Wittmann was up into second after his strong race one result, while Mattias Ekström was into the top three after his strong performance in race two. Jamie Green was also climbing the ranks after scoring in both races, overtaking early leaders Paul di Resta and Edoardo Mortara who had only claimed four points between them.
BMW Team RMG held onto their lead in the Team's Championship, although Abt Sportsline had slashed their advantage down to just three points after six races. BMW Team RBM were in third, ahead of the first Mercedes backed effort in the form of Team HWA I, who had Mücke Motorsport in close attendance. The Brand's Championship had also tightened up, with BMW just over 30 points away from Mercedes, with Audi on twelve points further back.
