The DTM Moskau 2016 Race 1 (DTM Москва 2016 in Russian), alternately known as the 2016 Moscow Raceway Race 1, was the eleventh round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, held at the Moscow Raceway in Volokolamsk, Moscow Oblast, Russia on 20 August 2016.[1] The race, which saw the debut of Swedish racer Felix Rosenqvist in place of Esteban Ocon, would see Robert Wickens sweep to his second victory in three races.[2]
There were two changes to the field after the DTM returned from its summer break, with Adrien Tambay cleared to return to the #27 Audi, meaning René Rast returned to his reserve role.[3] Over at Mercedes, meanwhile, Ocon had been called up to the Manor F1 Team and hence would move into Formula One, prompting the Stuttgart based manufacturer to place their reserve Rosenqvist in the second ART Grand Prix car for the rest of the season.[3]
Qualifying would see Gary Paffett sweep to pole position, with a well timed lap in tricky conditions putting the Brit six tenths clear at the head of the field.[4] Paul di Resta and Maximilian Götz would then secure a top-four lockout for Mercedes, while Mattias Ekström and Maxime Martin would lead the respective Audi and BMW charges from fifth and sixth.[4]
Heavy rain and fog would descend upon the Moscow Raceway for the first race, with conditions poor enough that the race had to start behind the Safety Car.[2] That effectively gave the field three sighting laps, with the race officially restarting on lap four, with Paffett at the head of the field.[2]
Paffett would duly assume the lead, although a strong run for Wickens allowed the Canadian the sneak inside the #2 Mercedes to secure the lead.[2] The #6 Mercedes then jetted away from the sister car at an impressive rate, as behind debutante Rosenqvist got into a fight with Timo Glock.[2]
The Swede duly seized eighth from the German racer, only for both to be passed by Edoardo Mortara as the Italian scythed his way up the order.[2] Jamie Green followed his stablemate through to relegate Rosenqvist to tenth, as up front di Resta would make a move stick on Paffett for second.[2]
An Anglo-Scottish fight for second would erupt in that moment, with di Resta slipping wide to hand the initiative back to Paffett, with the pair subsequently exchanging blows.[2] That was ultimately settled when the Mercedes team stepped in, for di Resta had superiority in the Championship, as behind Mortara swept past Timo Scheider, before swapping places with Green after getting stuck behind Martin.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, Wickens would cruise through to the chequered flag to claim a Championship leading victory, with di Resta ten seconds back in second.[2] Paffett was next up ahead of Götz, who had spent the entire race keeping Ekström at bay.[2] Martin was next up with Green glued to his tail, Mortara slipped back from the Brit to claim eighth, while Scheider and Rosenqvist completed the scorers.[2]
Background[]
The big news to break since the round in Zandvoort was that Esteban Ocon had been signed up to the Manor Racing effort in Formula One.[5] That left a vacant seat at ART Grand Prix, although Mercedes were quick to confirm that reserve driver, and reigning FIA Formula 3 European Championship champion Felix Rosenqvist would be stepping in for the rest of the season.[6] The Swede would take the number #88 as his race number for the season, while also confirming a testing role in the Formula E Championship with Mahindra Racing team.[6]
The Witt's End[]
Marco Wittmann had retained the lead of the DTM Championship after his two top four finishes in Zandvoort, as Jamie Green leapt into second, seven points back after his victory in race two. Edoardo Mortara had slipped to third ahead of the first Mercedes backed driver in the form of Robert Wickens, who was just five away from the Italian after winning race one. At the foot of the table, meanwhile, there had been some shuffling as Daniel Juncadella and Esteban Ocon registered their first points of the season, meaning everyone bar Zandvoort debutante René Rast had scored in 2016.
After a strong weekend for their lead driver, it would be BMW and BMW Team RMG who headed to Moscow with the lead in the Teams' and Manufacturers' Championships, having continued to pick up points in both races. Audi Team Abt Sportsline had slipped to second, losing out by seven points, while BMW Team RBM were in third ahead of Audi Team Rosberg. Audi were still in second having picked up one win during the weekend, while Mercedes made some ground, despite the fact that their best team were found down in seventh.

- Rosenqvist secured his maiden points finish.
Standings[]
Robert Wickens had moved to the top of the Championship with victory, heading into the second race of the weekend with 108 points to his name. That meant that the Canadian ace was three ahead of former leader Marco Wittmann, with Jamie Green a point further behind in third. Edoardo Mortara was next up ahead of Paul di Resta, those two level on 92 points, while debutante Felix Rosenqvist was on the board in 25th.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Abt Sportsline had moved back to the top of table, establishing a seven point lead. BMW Team RMG had slipped to second, before a fairly large gap back to third placed BMW Team RBM. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, a strong Saturday Race had moved Mercedes to the top of the table, swapping places with former leaders BMW.
