2016 Moscow Raceway Race 1 | 2016 Nürburgring Race 1 |
The DTM Moskau 2016 Race 2 (DTM Москва 2016 in Russian), also known as the 2016 Moscow Raceway Race 2, was the twelfth race of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Moscow Raceway in Volokolamsk, Moscow Oblast, Russia, on 21 August 2016.[1] The race would see Marco Wittmann storm to his second victory of the campaign, restoring his Championship lead in a battle dominated by BMW.[2]
Qualifying had seen Wittmann secure pole position, as BMW secured six of the top eight positions due to the fact that they had the lowest running weight of the field.[3] Indeed, Tom Blomqvist would secure second on the grid ahead of Maxime Martin, although the Belgian racer would crash heavily and cause a red flag, while Championship leader Robert Wickens would head the counter charge for Mercedes in fourth.[3]
Martin was taken to hospital for checks and was subsequently passed fit to race, although the repairs needed to his car meant that he was relegated to the back of the field.[4] That bumped most of the field up a position ahead of the race, with no other changes to the field, amid reports that rain would wash across the circuit mid-race.[4]
The start of the race would see Marco Wittmann sweep into the lead from pole, while Blomqvist fended off the attentions of Robert Wickens and Daniel Juncadella to secure second.[2] Juncadella subsequently came under attack from Bruno Spengler and slipped behind, and as he tried to retaliate later during the opening tour would run onto the grass and drop back.[2]
With that Wittmann was away, sprinting clear during the early laps as Blomqvist did his best to hold up Wickens, with Championship games in play.[2] Spengler remained on their tail but without the pace to challenge his compatriot for third, while Juncadella headed a queue of cars.[2]
The first incident of the race came at the end of lap twelve, with a lunge from Jamie Green at António Félix da Costa at the final corner resulting in the Portuguese racer being spun to the back of the field.[2] Green was left with damage to the front of his car, before his race was ultimately demolished by a slow stop and then a penalty for a pitlane infringement.[2]
The pitstops would see Wittmann retain his healthy advantage, while a slow stop for Wickens dumped him off the back of Blomqvist and into Spengler's sights.[2] The #7 BMW would eventually elbow its way past, with Augusto Farfus also able to force his way past the #6 Mercedes.[2]
Indeed, the closing laps would be all about Wickens, who was suffering with a power steering issue that later developed into a complete failure.[2] He hence had a queue of cars behind him encompassing the rest of the top ten, which allowed Edoardo Mortara and Nico Müller to storm up the order, while Paul di Resta clipped Timo Glock into a spin.[2]
With that the race was run, with Wittmann cruising through to claim victory, while Blomqvist was a lonely second having paced the German throughout the second stint.[2] Spengler was next up ahead of Farfus, while Wickens just fended off Mortara in a drag race to the finish line.[2] Müller was next up ahead of Adrien Tambay and Mattias Ekström, while Lucas Auer secured the final point in tenth as the queue behind Wickens shuffled in the closing stages.[2]
Background[]
Robert Wickens had moved to the top of the Championship with victory, heading into the second race of the weekend with 108 points to his name. That meant that the Canadian ace was three ahead of former leader Marco Wittmann, with Jamie Green a point further behind in third. Edoardo Mortara was next up ahead of Paul di Resta, those two level on 92 points, while debutante Felix Rosenqvist was on the board in 25th.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Abt Sportsline had moved back to the top of table, establishing a seven point lead. BMW Team RMG had slipped to second, before a fairly large gap back to third placed BMW Team RBM. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, a strong Saturday Race had moved Mercedes to the top of the table, swapping places with former leaders BMW.
