The 2016 Nürburgring Race 1, formally known as the DTM Nürburg 2016 Race 1, was the thirteenth round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, held on the Sprint circuit at the Nürburgring in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on 10 September 2016.[1] The race would see Marco Wittmann secure an impressive victory from pole position, putting him in command of the Championship.[2]
Lucas Auer would set the fastest lap in qualifying, although after he had hit the limit for reprimands the Austrian racer would be relegated to sixth on the grid.[3] Wittmann duly inherited pole position ahead of BMW stablemate Tom Blomqvist, Jamie Green and Edoardo Mortara would share the second row for Audi, while Auer would share the third row with Mercedes stablemate Daniel Juncadella.[3]
The start of the race saw Wittmann ease ahead of Blomqvist, while a barnstorming start for Juncadella saw the #12 Mercedes charge past Green and Mortara for third.[2] Green attempted to retaliate around the outside of the first corner and duly reclaimed third, while Mortara swept back past the Spaniard at turn three.[2]
The race quickly settled down, with the only change to the order at the head of the field coming when Timo Glock scythed past Auer, opening the door for Paul di Resta to follow through.[2] Wittmann, meanwhile, would break clear with Blomqvist dropping a couple of seconds back as a rear gunner, prompting Audi to swap Green and Mortara around as the the Brit had been unable to pass the #31 BMW.[2]
Mortara duly began his assault on Blomqvist, although would only succeed in smacking into the Brit at the chicane on lap 14 on his first attempt.[2] They duly scrambled back on without losing any positions, although Juncadella, who had passed Green, did get a run on Mortara, before the Italian racer tried another lunge into the first corner.[2]
This time Blomqvist was able to block the lunge without contact, while Juncadella's attempts to take advantage were ended by Green as the the #53 Audi dived back past.[2] Bruno Spengler would then introduce himself to the fight, although his clumsy lunge at Juncadella for fifth ended with the Spaniard spinning to the back, and the Canadian earning a drive-through penalty.[2]
Elsewhere, Adrien Tambay earned himself a penalty for smashing into Augusto Farfus at the back of the field, a collision which also smashed the Frenchman's suspension.[2] Elsewhere, Mattias Ekström would destroy his car with a misjudged lunge at Maximilian Götz at the chicane, while Timo Scheider retired prematurely with damage after spinning Gary Paffett down the field.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, Wittmann would run unopposed to the chequered flag, beating Blomqvist by seven seconds to secure his third win of the campaign.[2] Behind them, Green was waved through by Mortara in the closing stages to score third, while Timo Glock secured a lonely fifth ahead of di Resta.[2] Auer was next up ahead of Maxime Martin, while title pretender Robert Wickens was a perplexed ninth ahead of Götz, unable to explain his lack of pace.[2]
Background[]
There had been another change atop the Championship after the second battle of Moscow, as Marco Wittmann reclaimed the lead with 130 points. Robert Wickens was his closest challenger having slipped to second, while Jamie Green had retained his spot in third ahead of Edoardo Mortara. Paul di Resta then completed the top five ahead of Tom Blomqvist and Maxime Martin, with 25 of the 26 drivers having scored.
In the Teams' Championship it was BMW Team RMG who had reclaimed the lead, overhauling Audi Team Abt Sportsline after dropping behind them after the first battle of Moscow. BMW Team RBM were next up ahead of Mercedes Team HWA I, the lead Mercedes team, with Audi Team Rosberg completing the top five. In the Manufacturers Championship, meanwhile, BMW had scrambled back to the top of the pile once again, leaving Russia with 436 point to their credit.

Standings[]
Incredibly there had been no changes in position after the first race at the Nürburgring, although Marco Wittmann had extended his lead to 35 points. The German racer hence had more than a race's worth of points over second placed Robert Wickens, while Jamie Green had moved a point behind the Canadian in third. Edoardo Mortara had also closed up in fourth ahead of Paul di Resta, while the gaps behind them had also closed.
In the Teams Championship BMW Team RMG had extended their advantage to 31 points, with Audi Team Abt Sportsline in second. BMW Team RBM had retained third, while Audi Team Rosberg had moved into fourth ahead of Mercedes Team HWA I. Likewise, it was likewise status quo in the Manufacturers' Championship, with BMW extending their lead to 76 points, while Mercedes had closed to within fourteen of Audi in second.
