2016 Nürburgring Race 1 | 2016 Hungaroring Race 1 |
The 2016 Nürburgring Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Nürburg 2016 Race 2, was the fourteenth round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, held on the Sprint circuit at the Nürburgring in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on 11 September 2016.[1] The race would see Edoardo Mortara reignite his title ambitions by claiming victory, having used an alternate strategy to climb through the field.[2]
Qualifying had seen Lucas Auer sweep to pole position for Mercedes for the second race in a row, although this time he would be able keep it.[3] Championship leader Marco Wittmann was his closest challenger in second, 0.030s behind, heading a quartet of fellow BMW drivers.[3]
The start of the race would see Auer sprint into the lead, sweeping across to the inside to prevent Wittmann from lunging into turn one.[2] Wittmann hence held second as Bruno Spengler refused to challenge his title pretending teammate, while Edoardo Mortara had scrambled up to fourth.[2]
Behind, however, there would be drama, as a fast starting Paul di Resta smacked into Timo Glock at the first corner, destroying his front suspension.[2] Yet, that would not develop into any further accident or incident, with di Resta retiring at the end of the lap, while Glock rejoined at the back of the field.[2]
The early stages saw the race quickly settle into a procession, with Auer unable to escape due to the fact that the Mercedes was by far the heaviest car in the field.[2] He hence had the rest of the top five glued to his tail, as behind Jamie Green tried to lunge past Augusto Farfus for sixth, allowing Gary Paffett to join the scrap as Tom Blomqvist got caught out by the fight ahead.[2]
The stops began on lap 14, with Farfus leading a quartet of cars in, before being released into the path of Robert Wickens and Miguel Molina and earning the Brazilian a penalty.[2] Elsewhere, Auer and Wittmann came in on lap 17 from the lead, with a faster stop for the Austrian keeping him ahead.[2] More pit dramas would see Felix Rosenqvist collide with Martin Tomczyk when he was released from his stop, earning him a drive-through.[2]
The new tyres worked wonders for Auer, for it allowed him to escape from the immediate threat of Wittmann and co. behind.[2] However, Mortara was able to match the Austrian's pace despite running on significantly older tyres, and held a 26 second lead with ten minutes to go.[2]
Mortara duly made his stop in that moment, and while he rejoined behind Auer, he was safely ahead of Wittmann and armed with fresh tyres.[2] With a certain inevitability the #48 Audi caught and passed the #22 Mercedes with ease a few moments later, before sprinting clear of the Austrian.[2]
With that the race was run, with Mortara sweeping clear to secure victory, while Auer was on his own in second.[2] Wittmann was next up ahead of Mattias Ekström, who was glued to the German's tail, while Nico Müller and Spengler completed the top six.[2] Paffett was next up having survived an assault from Green, which had ended with the latter getting a drive-through, while Blomqvist, Daniel Juncadella and Molina claimed the remaining points.[2]
Background[]
Incredibly there had been no changes in position after the first race at the Nürburgring, although Marco Wittmann had extended his lead to 35 points. The German racer hence had more than a race's worth of points over second placed Robert Wickens, while Jamie Green had moved a point behind the Canadian in third. Edoardo Mortara had also closed up in fourth ahead of Paul di Resta, while the gaps behind them had also closed.
In the Teams Championship BMW Team RMG had extended their advantage to 31 points, with Audi Team Abt Sportsline in second. BMW Team RBM had retained third, while Audi Team Rosberg had moved into fourth ahead of Mercedes Team HWA I. Likewise, it was likewise status quo in the Manufacturers' Championship, with BMW extending their lead to 76 points, while Mercedes had closed to within fourteen of Audi in second.

Milestones[]
- Sixth win for Edoardo Mortara.
Standings[]
Marco Wittmann would head to the Hungaroring with a healthy lead in the Championship as the seventh weekend of the season came to a conclusion, moving onto 170 points. That meant that second placed Edoardo Mortara was 33 points behind after his victory in the second Nürburgring race, while Robert Wickens had slipped to third. Jamie Green was still in the title hunt as well as Paul di Resta, although they and Wickens would have to have a strong weekend in Hungary to maintain their title ambitions.
In the Teams' Championship BMW Team RMG would maintain their lead in the Championship, although their advantage had been reduced to nine points. Audi Team Abt Sportsline were their biggest threat in second, while BMW Team RBM were in third, 50 points behind second placed Abt Sportsline. BMW, meanwhile, would hold onto the initiative in the Constructors' Championship, moving onto 521 points and hence held a 57 point lead over Audi in second.
