2016 Lausitzring Race 2 | 2016 Norisring Race 2 |
The 2016 Norisring Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Nuremburg 2016 Race 1, was the seventh round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Norisring in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany on 25 June 2016.[1] The race would see Edoardo Mortara claim victory, after teammate Mattias Ekström clashed with two race leading Mercedes.[2]
Qualifying had proved to be a battle between the DTM's two founding members Mercedes and Audi, a battle won by Christian Vietoris ahead of Ekström.[3] Jamie Green was next up the #53 Audi ahead of Robert Wickens in the #6 Mercedes, while Bruno Spengler was the lone BMW pilot in the top ten in fifth ahead of Mortara.[3]
The start would see Vietoris dive across to deny Ekström a lunge into the first corner, while Wickens slithered ahead of Green.[2] The rest of the field would surprisingly make it through the tight first hairpin without issue, with only minor contact affecting those in the middle of the pack.[2]
Ekström was on the warpath in the early stages, having briefly got ahead of Vietoris exiting turn two, only for the German racer to lunge back ahead at the Schöller S.[2] The Swede subsequently lined up a lunge into the first hairpin a few laps later, only for Wickens to dive past the #5 Audi to secure second.[2]
Seeking revenge, Ekström would throw his own lunge at Wickens a few laps later into turn two, with the Canadian racer leaving one car's width inside.[2] Ekström went for it and barged down the inside of Wickens, before smashing into the back of race leader Vietoris and causing the race leader to spin.[2]
Wickens was out on the spot, while Ekström would complete another lap before retiring with a smashed radiator and Vietoris spun around to rejoin at the back of the top ten.[2] Regardless, as they sorted themselves out Mortara would sweep inside the collision to secure the lead ahead of Green, while Paul di Resta gave chase ahead of Marco Wittmann.[2]
The Safety Car was called upon to clear the scene, before Mortara aced the restart to claim a small lead over Green and di Resta.[2] Green went on the attack in the closing stages and did everything he could to pass Mortara without risking an accident, while di Resta tried to find an opening behind them.[2]
With that the race was run, with Mortara, claiming victory with Green and di Resta running nose-to-tail on his bumper.[2] Wittmann was a relatively distant fourth ahead of Spengler and Martin, while Adrien Tambay, Maximilian Götz, António Félix da Costa and the wounded Vietoris completed the scorers.[2]
Background[]
Robert Wickens claimed the lead in the DTM Championship after the Lausitzring meeting, his two quiet drives to the podium carrying him up the order. Marco Wittmann was up into second after his strong race one result, while Mattias Ekström was into the top three after his strong performance in race two. Jamie Green was also climbing the ranks after scoring in both races, overtaking early leaders Paul di Resta and Edoardo Mortara who had only claimed four points between them.
BMW Team RMG held onto their lead in the Team's Championship, although Abt Sportsline had slashed their advantage down to just three points after six races. BMW Team RBM were in third, ahead of the first Mercedes backed effort in the form of Team HWA I, who had Mücke Motorsport in close attendance. The Brand's Championship had also tightened up, with BMW just over 30 points away from Mercedes, with Audi on twelve points further back.
